Travel suggestions after Stavanger, Norway

We are spending several days in Stavanger, Norway with family. We would like to travel to someplace in Northern Europe for a week or two afterward. We hope to avoid using too much time in traveling between Stavanger and or next destination. Any thoughts?

You could travel elsewhere in Norway, or, hop across to Scotland - there are frequent one hour-long direct flights to Aberdeen, courtesy of the oil industry, if you don't mind turboprop planes. Scotland is just about perfect for a 10-15 day trip, you can cover a good chunk of the country in that time frame.
What time of the year, though?

Norway is spectacular, why would you go there and see "only" family? Have you seen the fjords? I'd really recommend going along the West coast at least up to Bergen and visit a couple of fjords.

I agree, Norway is spectacular, but family will be there for four years and we plan at least 2 trips per year. So going somewhere else in November seems to make sense to us.

I don't have family in Norway but of the European countries have been to Norway more than any other European countries. That said, you in all likelihood will not be getting a direct flight from home to Stavenger (or even to Oslo) from your home airport. I have had to connect through LHR, AMS and CPH on flights to OSL depending on airline and my starting home airport. I have taken those connection opportunities to visit London (LHR) and Copenhagen (CPH) at essentially no extra airline cost. Look at where you will hub to or from Stavenger and do a stop over in that city/country.

Edgar is right, and has a great idea. If you are already going to have a layover somewhere, make the tickets work so you stay awhile and visit. Copenhagen, Stockholm, Amsterdam and London are the typical layovers for Oslo. You may even find some direct flights from Stavanger to those destinations.
