Travel show with Rick

I am beyond excited that after attending the travel show here in New York City for over 10 years, Rick is finally going to be a speaker. I already told my husband that we have to get there early cause I want a seat front and center.
I just purchased our tickets, even got a BOGO free offer. It’s January 27. It will be the perfect pick me up for a January which is always dreary.

Oh, and Phil Rosenthal, from somebody feed Phil, is also a speaker. I kinda find him annoying but will go see his talk too.

Oh fun, I hope you'll come tell us all about it in February!

Enjoy the travel show! Rick spoke in Denver back in 2001, just after 9/11, with a slideshow. We were sitting right next to the slide projector halfway back in the room, and saw Rick set it up himself. Maybe the travel show in New York will have a crew to help support the presenters.

Rick also had a table in front or the stage, filled with a display of his books. He began his talk by asking people who’d taken books off the table to please return them … they weren’t free samples, but had been there to show people the kind of destinations and materials that they could consider for an upcoming trip. Wonder if he’s changed the table of books strategy in the last couple of decades? Maybe a digital display? Or books attached by cables to the table?

lol. We’ll see. I was going to purchase some new books on line but now I’ll just wait and see what he has for sale there. They usually give you a small discount.

Barbara, that will be so interesting and so much fun! I got to hear Rick speak back in 2010 or thereabouts at the Cincinnati Public Library. The program was scheduled to start at 3 PM, I believe. But about 20 minutes beforehand, he came walking out, told the audience that he was bored waiting and asked if we had any questions for him.

So for the next 20 minutes, we all talked to him and asked questions. It was a lot of fun. And of course his actual talk was very interesting although I don’t remember what it was. 😊 He’s a very good speaker.

Thanks for posting this, now I'm down a rabbit hole looking at the other events nationwide to see there is one I could get to for inspiration. FYI, Rick is also speaking at the Chicago and LA shows according to his schedule.

Several locations include my 1980s crush, actor Andrew McCarthy as a guest speaker (he's written a book about walking the Camino de Santiago)...tempting! For others interested in rabbit hole-ing: https://travelshows.com/

We’re doing part of the Camino next September. Now I have to get Andrew’s book to read. Another item on my Christmas wish list.

In the early 90s, I used to volunteer for the American Youth Hostels at the DC Hostel. AYH used to have a travel day where they invited various speakers. One year I was the volunteer taking care of the speaker room and Rick Steves was one of the speakers so I got to meet Rick.

I saw him last February at the travel show here in LA, and he was amazingly accessible afterwards and signed my Istanbul guidebook. My daughter snapped a bunch of pictures and said I acted like I was meeting a rock star. The talk was good too ;)
Have fun!
