Travel Jacket

I usually travel in Europe during shoulder season where a light jacket is necessary. I'm thinking of getting one, either blazer style or light windbreaker style that is geared for travel and has "hidden pockets" that are closed by either zipper or velcro.

I would still carry money, passport, credit cards in my moneybelt, but thought I could use the jacket for my cellphone, small digital camera, tiny umbrella and an occassional map. Thus, no need for a daybag.

Anyone ever use one of these type jackets and are they really "pickpocket proof?" Did you like them? Suggestions on brands? Thanks.

You could try an Outdoors shop like Bass Pro Shop. They have Fishermen's (Fisherwoman's) type lightweight vests with multiple pockets which can be worn hidden under a jacket. The pockets have snaps or could be refitted with velcro.

Photogs like to wear these vests, too.

Sorry I can't actually name a specific brand.

Another idea would be to wear Cargo pants like EMS. (Just don't buy the ones with the reflective tape down the legs. LOL!!) The pockets are quite deep and have multiple pockets inside with a velcro flap.

I get mine without the reflective stripe for $50 at Marks Work Warehouse. They are really meant for EMS but aren't noticably a uniform piece. They are pretty wrinkle resistant and stain resistant, too. They have to be, in my line of work!

If you are looking for a travel jack with lots of hidden pockets check out: www.scottevest.com
The jacket I have has over 25 pockets! More than half of those pockets are hidden on the inside. It's a good high quality product-highly recommended.

Michael, I was looking at the Scottevest (online) and was thinking of either the Evolution or the Essentials.

Are they comfortable? Do you feel the items in the pockets are secure? Do they still fit well after the pockets have things in them or do the items stick out?

Hi - for those that have them - do the magnetic pocket closuers cause any issue at the airport - i guess you have to take it off anyways but just curious!

The jackets are very comfortable, and look good; I have the model they made for travelsmith.com. The pockets come in all different "flavors". Some are zippered shut, some use velcro, others use magnetic snaps; some pockets are tiny, some are very deep. There are even pockets within some of the pockets! Some of the pockets are more secure than others because they each have a different function. For example there is one big pocket on the inside that is specifically designed to hold a small water bottle; obviously this pocket just uses velcro. On the other side there is a pocket shaped to hold a guidebook. The only issue with the magnetic snap pockets is with credit cards, you can't use those pockets because they might erase the magnetic strip.
I can't emphasize enough how well built these just are; the materials from the fabric to the zippers they use are top of the line, and they hold up very well.

Thanks Michael - so assuming the Credit cards are in the top hidden pocket of in your money belt - thats far enough away?

Yeah, If your CCs are in your money belt there is no problem. One other thing I should mention these jackets are not designed to keep one warm in harsh winter conditions; it's all about pockets:)

Layering will keep me warm. I'm just using the jacket as another layer. And as a way not to have to carry a daybag, backpack, messenger bag, etc. My hands will be free.

And if I really wanted to keep warm, I could carry a flask in one of those pockets.

Now, if i could only figure out how to do this in warmer weather. (Not having to carry anything I mean. The flask would always come in handy.) :)

I guess the only way would be to wear a Pacsafe waist belt that has all compartments locked so pickpockets can't get in. Unless someone else has some other ideas for hands free travel.

for summer - cargo shorts (Scottevest make those zillion pocket pants/zipoff-cargos too)... but again with magnets! (but plenty of room for a flask or two!
