travel insurance with work as the reason

I know this is not a European question but I have been impressed by this community's knowledge of travel insurance so I thought I would ask.

My son is a claims adjuster for an insurance company in Florida. His cousin is getting married in NJ in September and he would really like to go. September is hurricane season. So if there is a hurricane category 2, 3, 4, or 5 in Florida he will be working seven days a week and will not be able to attend the wedding. He asked me about flight insurance. The flight insurance I am familiar with is for illness or equivalent but I found some discussion on line about work related cancellations.

Is anyone familiar with such insurance and whether required work attendance would be a covered reason? Any recommendation for companies?

I seem to remember that Travelex has a Business endorsement option right on their marketing menu, maybe just Travel Select product? Look at their website. I use plain-vanilla travelex, and not these optional bells and whistles. Of course, you have to read all the language - he'd know about that!

Hi,

My boss insists there is one out there. I would think that it is very expensive since most do not include it. Your son's job is a bit different. My thinking, if my job requires me to come back or cancel a pre-approved trip, they are paying to bring me back.

Your son works in the Insurance industry. What was he able to learn from coworkers or superiors both inside and outside his department? It sounds like he could have access to people who could point him in the right direction regarding finding this type of travel insurance.

The other obvious option is to get a refundable ticket, need to cancel, do so. Hotels and rental cars are cancelable as well, so worst case, he is out nothing.

The problem with what you are asking of an insurance company is the ability to cancel at will, that can have a high risk, hence a high cost.

There are travel policies with a "cancel for any reason" clause but he'd need to talk to the company to make sure "having vacation cancelled" is a reason. I thought "any reason" actually meant "any reason", lol but it does not.

Likely a high price insurance. Keep in mind insurance companies are in the business of making money. How expensive is a non-refundable air ticket Florida to NJ. If he goes he is out the airfare and more. If he is working 7 days a week, hopefully is not exempt from overtime laws/rules. The other option is buy a refundable ticket.

“Cancel For Any Reason” (CFAR) coverage is usually an add-on feature
(as a paid upgrade) to a trip insurance policy. CFAR ensures that
travelers receive a refund of 50-75% of their insured non-refundable
and pre-paid trip costs if they choose to cancel their trip for any
reason at all vs. the standard covered reasons under regular trip
cancellation coverage which covers 100% of those trip costs.

TravelGuard's "Gold" policy. Covers "need to work," even for those self-employed.

Thanks for all the replies. The idea of having him ask his co-workers is a good one. He has been there less than a year so still doesn't know all the ropes.

I was able to get a price for Travel Guard "Gold" policy that included "cancel for work reasons". It was $23, assuming a $400 ticket. So certainly a reasonable option.

As usual, you have to read the fine print, but I see that both Travel Basic and Travel Select at Travelex claim to include Cancel for Business Reasons in their stock product without extra charge. Download the details if interested. (I'm a customer with no connection to the company.)
