We are traveling to France and the UK for 3 weeks in July and want to purchase travel insurance. My father is 100 years old and doesn't have a life threatening illness right now but it is possible he could pass away at any time, of course, given his age.
I have two questions:
1. Which insurance companies would you recommend for coverage for us?
2. Will travel insurance even cover our trip if my dad passes away, given his age?
Thank you!
You could try this site, and there are others which have no age limits. https://www.payingtoomuch.com/travel-insurance/over-80s/?campaignid=1813&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwm7q-BhDRARIsACD6-fUKbx5U2uPMJsRnwnpbMR41iqtppy2JwlyjMEG2dUYJuXL0TeE64BEaAi1oEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
But I am sorry to say your dad might be really expensive to insure. The main risk to travel insurance companies is having to return someone to their home country or a suitable hospital under medical supervision if they are too sick to travel in the normal way. Alternatively, (although hopefully not for your dad) there is even the chance they might need to return a body. Insuring that risk in someone of 100 is bound to cost a lot. Your dad has done amazingly well to get to that age but that is just the stats I am afraid. However, even though insurance may cost more than the flight, you may choose to go for it. Good luck!
What Londonist says is true, but normally insurers will only cover residents of the county where they (the insurers) operate.
So you need to look at US companies. I believe that some credit cards, such as Amex, may include cover.
is your Dad travelling on this trip or staying home and you want insurance to be able to return to him if the worst were to occur?
Hi Linnea
I do not know too much about this as I have not looked into it but I think that United Health Care is now offering travel insurance.
I am aware of this by receiving notifications now and then but I do not even recall when or where I received the notifications.
You might look into United Health Care Travel Insurance.
Update: Found the link.
https://www.uhcsafetrip.com/home/
and apparently AARP also offers travel insurance through a third party.
The only solution is to read the actual policy you are contemplating buying. Anything else is just a bad financial decision-making process.
For example, I found that my usual provider, Travelex, does NOT exclude Pre-Existing Conditions (... this usually regards Cancellation only ... ) in persons who are NOT traveling. But another company could word it differently. This is also a lesson for you, because "Cancellation" and "Interruption" are completely different pages of the policy. This is not for sloppy or careless readers. You are the consumer, and you need to fully inform yourself. One company name or another, over the internet, is NOT enough.
In case this is not clear, I am saying that it could (possibly) make a difference if your father dies the day before you leave, or the day after you leave. That's the nature of travel insurance.
Linnea, I am assuming that your concern is that you are traveling overseas and are concerned that you might have to come home suddenly before your trip is over due to your father passing suddenly. And of course that would incur extra costs.
If so, then yes, there is travel insurance that covers costs you incur due to the sudden death of a family member. I would suggest looking at https://www.squaremouth.com so you can compare policies. I personally use Travel Insured International, but I get a discount for that through USAA. Allianz is another company that many here use and like.
Tim is correct, of course, in that you do have to pay very close attention to the language and what it covers.
Thank you everyone for this helpful information. I realize I wasn't clear enough about my Dad's situation - he will not be traveling with us so the insurance would be to cover us needing to return home if he suddenly developed a life-threatening condition or if he passed away suddenly.
Sounds like the most important thing lies in reading the fine print in whatever policy I get.
Happy travels everyone!
Let us know what you find. "Return Home" is a lot different than "Cant go" so this will be interesting to see what is covered.
We have trip cancellation insurance through our credit card that’s provided by Allianz. It covers unreimbursed costs if a trip is cancelled because of death or severe illness of a parent. We’ve submitted claims for cancellation due to our own illness or injury a couple of times and had no issues, though on the claim form we did have to list all the doctors that the person in question visited during the 90 days prior to diagnosis. The biggest issue was that the airline offered “store credit” for the non refundable tickets, good on future flights, so we had to take that instead of a monetary refund from the policy. Good luck with the trip!
I realized today was the last day I could book travel insurance and still get coverage for pre-existing conditions both for ourselves and my father (have to book it no more than 14 days from the time you first booked the trip and we were on day 14, so we went to AAA Travel agent today and discussed the issue and ended up booking travel insurance through AAA with Allianz. The agent spoke with the insurance company rep directly while we were there in a conference call and the insurance company said that they WOULD cover the costs of the trip if my elderly Dad were to pass away, because we were within the 14 day window and the plan covers death of a family member. I also asked them about the flight credit issue brought up in this thread, and the insurance agent said we could choose to either take the flight credit or they would reimburse us the cost of the flight, that it would not be required to take the flight credit. So we bought the insurance. My husband, an attorney, is going to carefully go over the contract to be sure but it looks like we'll be covered! Fingers crossed.
I should add that we got what seemed like an affordable premium price (5-6% of the trip cost). This might be partly because the insurance company plan offered benefits for my two daughters free of charge.
Linnea, That's so kind of you to get back to us with details of what you were able to purchase! Always useful to get more info about travel insurance.
So just to be clear, you've purchased trip cancellation insurance. I've never seen that type of policy covering you for MEDICAL emergencies for yourselves while overseas? But since he's 100 years old, you may well be +65, in which case Medicare supplemental ( like our Part C & D) through Kaiser has $50,000 of medical emergency coverage overseas per lifetime. But it's for reinbursement, you pay out of pocket first.
THEN to make matters more complicated, neither of the above policies cover you for evacuation insurance in the event you have a serious injury and need help getting home. Some Forum members use Medjet. https://medjetassist.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=partners&utm_campaign=partner%20pages
I'm going to try TravelInsured this trip, similar to Medjet. Hope you have a great trip!
Actually our insurance is for both trip cancellation and trip interruption and it covers emergency medical/dental care for us during the trip, including-transportation/evacuation after a medical emergency arises, as well as coverage if my father passes away. We bought this insurance through American Automobile Association (AAA) of which we are members, and the insurance plan is a benefit offered to members, so it's possible that our plan is unique to AAA members but I am not sure.
Interesting to hear about TravelInsured and Medjet - might check those out next time! Have a wonderful trip!
Very interesting, thanks again for sharing the details. We have AAA 'Premier' membership beneits, I did know it covered some overseas items but not nearly as many as you've highlighted!
