Travel Insurance Recommendations

For years we traveled to Austria/Germany every two years and never thought about purchasing Travel Insurance. Now, four years after our last trip we are making plans for yet another much anticipated trip. However, we are now older and more aware of our needs in case something happens after we plan our trip or if we have a need while a long way from Florida. I would like to hear both positive comments and negative experiences so that we can make an informed decision. We aren't looking for the highest priced plans, nor the lowest but what we should be aware based on your experiences. Happy Travels to all. Thanks. Kelly.

I use Travel Insured, my bank provides a discount through them, for my trips to Europe. Have been using them for the past 2+ years. I have two trips coming up, one to France in 5-days and one to Germany in 3-months. Have not had to use it or file a claim, but I feel its best to be prepared. My mother will be going through a surgery in a few days, depending on how she does I may have to cancel my France trip. My policy would cover my loss if I end up cancelling.

We used to get it because of possible need to cancel ( aging parents) and now get it for medical issues, such as a fall. We don't have any pre-existing issues, so we don't worry about that being covered. Usually we get it right away because they offer some perks if you book within a window of your initial deposit. I don't know if they offer a price break on when you book. We went with the middle plan on Travel Insured because they gave us the best rate (Travel Insured, TravelGuard, Allianze). We have never had to use it, so I can't help with that.

Hi Kelshe,

We are doing the same thing. Our last trip was 3 years ago. Things change. We want to be covered for our airfare and car rental in case we can't travel due to accident or illness or family emergency. We also want to be covered for medical costs overseas, etc. just in case. We called the toll free number at insuremytrip.com, who are brokers. Excellent service, advice and thorough explanations from the reps on the phone. We're looking at about $180 for a policy from Nationwide to insure our airfare and car costs, plus lost baggage, trip interruption, trip delay, medical while away, medical evacuation, etc. etc.

The web site www.tripinsurancestore.com shows a table comparison of a small numbered of "trusted" companies. They also are very responsive to E-mail or phone call questions you may have about travel insurance. We have not had to file a claim, but I felt comfortable with their recommendations for what we wanted to cover.

I always use insuremytrip.com. You can compare many different companies based on your criteria.
I almost always end up with Travel Guard.

we used Allianz Global Assistance to insure an Alaskan cruise. my mom passed away a month before the cruise and AGA reimbursed us the whole cruise fare. I had to submit a death certificate, etc. they didn't give me a hard time.

AGA charges about 7% of the value of the air ticket. the coverage is for baggage delay, emergency medical and dental, trip cancellation and delay, etc. you could compare prices with the other suggested insurance companies (I haven't used Travel Insured).
