Travel Insurance Question

I was planning on a long fairly expensive Asian trip next winter. I have always bought travel insurance in case of all those possible unexpected glitches which could happen to me. However, I have just found out that my father (age 96) is not doing well at all. Would travel insurance be valid and effective for this situation?

Paula, read the fine print. There are different kinds and levels of insurance out there. Some cover that kind of hardship although they vary. Some might cover any kind of serious medical condition whereas others only cover in - well, the worst and last case.

I've had policies where the trip cancellation insurance covered cancellations due to the health of me or my immediate family, or my travel companion, so I know that those are out there. But as Andreas said, each company's coverage is different, and you'll want to check out the fine print before deciding on a company.

This is what cancellation insurance is designed for.

As others have stated here - read the details of the policy before you buy it (they all are a little different).

- Some plans would require that you have a waiver for pre-existing medical conditions (even though he is not traveling with you).

- Other plans state that if he passes away before your trip, then you would be covered for cancellation as well as interruption.

Call and talk to someone before you buy a plan - then ask to see where you can find that information in the policy details.

Many people from this board recommend www.insuremytrip.com

This is a site that can tell you what to look for in the policy and even recommend the plans that would work for your situation. I have used them in the past and found the prices to be the same as going to the insurance company direct. (I prefer to use a 3rd party when buying insurance)

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the "read the small print carefully" advice and the independent website. If I do decide to continue with my travel plans, I will definitely buy travel insurance that, if needed, would cover this sort of situation.
