Travel Insurance Purchased Now Will (probably) Not Cover the Volcano

Great Article by the local news company here. A lot more questions on travel insurance are popping up (naturally), so I thought I'd post this.

There are still a million and one reasons to buy travel insurance, but the Icelandic Volcanoes might not be one of them... "pre-existing condition" anyone? Just an FYI.

"anyone who bought insurance before April 15, the day European airports started shutting down, is covered.

But if someone bought travel insurance today for a trip to Europe in the near future - and that volcano is still causing problems - they won't be covered."

Also some articles from the US, and UK showing how most of the insurance policies out there are not required to cover the volcanoes. Though most of them are.

The good old "act of God" "force majeure" clause.

Luckily most of them realize the regulatory and publicity nightmare this would cause! But just so folks know... most of them don't have to cover...

Still a million other good reason to get trip insurance!

I expect the insurers to pay the claims. the disaster is reminding travelers that unexpected things can always happen and will probably drive up travel insurance sales in the future. Drive them up, that is, if the word doesn't go around that when you need the coverage they find a way to take it away.
