Travel Insurance - Medical Only

I'm going to Germany and France next month. I always get travel insurance, as my health insurance in the U.S. doesn't cover me outside the country. I only want medical and medical evacuation coverage, so the amount I want covered is $0. I've checked insuremytrip.com (I've used them many times) and squaremouth.com (used once before), but I'm wondering if any of you has another suggestion for me. Thanks!

I’m using a World Nomads policy this summer. The one I bought has more than you want, but maybe it can be stripped down?

Nelly, thank you for the suggestion. I just looked at their website and there doesn't seem to be a stripped down version of the policy, so it covers far more than I need. It's also more expensive than the policies I saw on insure my trip.

Try calling a customer rep at insuremytrip.com. They are agents and may be aware of a policy that suits your needs.

Andrea:
Since someone mentioned World Nomads I would like to make the following comment: be sure to find independent reviews of the insurance companies that you are considering. On a recent trip to Europe I was shopping around for medical insurance and the low rates of World Nomads caught my eye. However, when I looked at the reviews my conclusion is that this company is not so friendly when it comes to reimbursing clients for medical expenses that they incurred. Too many people reported that they were left holding the bag for the entire cost of their expenses. That's too risky for me.

I always get medical evacuation insurance when I am going to a country where medical care services might not be up to USA or Western European standards where best course of action is to be transported back to the States. For example, I purchased such insurance from On Call International (which no longer sells to individual travellers) when I travelled to Turkey and to Russia. I had a medical problem in Russia which resulted in me being brought to a local hospital for extensive testing (this was in Volgograd a city of 1 Million and large enough to have a medical school). The condition of the hospital was sufficiently shabby that I declined the hospital's recommendation that I spend three nights there for treatment. Furthermore, no a single person in the hospital including the attending physician and specialist physician spoke English. I managed to hobble my way through the rest of my tour. YOu won't have a problem like this in France or Germany, but it's something to keep in mind when travelling overseas.

Instead of looking at websites, call and speak with a representative. I just bought a medical only policy for my 80 year old mother from Travel Guard. Pick a company with a good reputation. Their evacuation/repatriation coverage has no $ limit.
