Travel Insurance for Medical Pre-Existing

Good Morning

Planning a 3 week trip to multiple European countries and like others have commented, bought refundable airline tickets, booked accommodations with cancel by dates close to the trip, but due to pre-existing conditions I still need coverage for medical evacuations, etc. Additionally, travel insurance for a pre-existing condition you need to purchase within 14 days of booking the first expense for the trip. My question is - is there simply medical insurance for international travel that is reliable? Does anyone have any experience with a good or bad insurance carrier? I travel internationally every couple of years and have always simply purchased travel insurance without diving in and determining what do I really need. As I have age I am more aware of ensuring that I purchase only what I need. Can anyone recommend a carrier and/or any insight to purchasing ONLY medical coverage and evacuation for international travel. Thanks so much!

Are you aware of the differences between Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption? You have to read very carefully, but Travelex might offer almost what you want. There is evacuation/repatriation only insurance, but it might be an "annual" product: Medjet Assist. All products get more expensive as you age.

Based on recommendations from this forum, we carry a Med-Jet policy for emergency evacuation. For medical, we buy a Geo-Blue policy. It covers pre-existing conditions and does not need to be purchased within two or three weeks of booking your first trip expense. It is a medical policy though and doesn't cover all the trip related expenses that may come up. To buy Geo-Blue, you must have a primary health insurance, which in our case is Medicare, which doesn't cover us outside of the US. Like most, I haven't had to use either, and hope I never need to. For us, we feel we can self-insure trip costs, but buy insurance for the potentially huge cost of evacuation or medical.

Regarding pre-existing conditions, we have had an annual Medjet Assist policy. Both in our 70's now. Last year I had a medical issue, resolved with surgery. Everything came out fine. When applying to renew the Medjet Assist policy, I had to specify the medical surgery, and have the doctor fill in a two page form where he stated I was ok. Medjet then called us to verify that they would renew the policy, but there would be an exclusion for anything related to the surgery. That was no problem, so we renewed. I think the price was the same with the exclusion.

When shopping for medical evacuation, read the fine print. There are evacuation benefits with some policies which will only get you to a nearby hospital (in that country). And some policies which will fly you back to the U.S., but will only take you to a convenient East Coast city, NOT to your hometown hospital. Medjet Assist will fly us to a hospital of our choosing.

Regarding medical, we considerd additional travel insurance, but found that our Medicare Supplement plans (plan F, and plan G) did have some overseas travel coverage.

Everyone is giving you good advice. If you don’t need or want Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption, GeoBlue aka BCBC Global Solutions, is medical only. If you want cancellation/interruption included, Allianz is often recommended by forum posters. Medjet is the go-to med evac policy.
I’ve bought all three but have never filed a claim.

You can still purchase a policy that includes the things you don't want/need (trip delay, cancellation, lost baggage).

Just use a minimum amount ($500 or $1000) for your trip cost. This will reduce the premium, but still give you the full medical and evacuation coverage you want.
