Travel Insurance for Active People

I am always debating travel insurance and the pros/cons of getting it depending on my international travel plans for the year. Next year is a slightly "bigger" international schedule for us, so I was considering just going with an annual plan and calling it a day. What caught my eye in the one plan I was reading (assuming similar boilerplate in many plans) was both item 12 and several of the sub-items in 13 (like 13c, 13d, 13e and especially 13f).

I'm not crazy adventurous, but that seems like a LOT of broad brush non-coverage. Especially the "high" altitude exclusion - IOW how high is "high"? If this sort of travel insurance is the norm, what do active folks use instead? I don't see a higher plan through these folks (Allianz) but maybe there are more specialized ones others have used? Gotta be some marathon or cycling folks here who have done international events that warranted some sort of travel insurance.

This section describes the general exclusions applicable to all coverages under your policy. An “exclusion” is
something that is not covered by this insurance policy, and therefore no reimbursement would be available.
This policy does not provide coverage for any loss that results directly or indirectly from any of the following
general exclusions if they affect you, a traveling companion, or a family member:

...
12. Participating in or training for any amateur sporting competition while on your trip;
13. Participating in extreme, high-risk sports and activities, including but not limited to:
a. Skydiving, BASE jumping, hang gliding, or parachuting;
b. Bungee jumping;
c. Caving, rappelling, or spelunking;
d. Skiing or snowboarding outside marked trails or in an area accessed by helicopter;
e. Climbing sports or free climbing;
f. Any high-altitude activity;
g. Personal combat or fighting sports;
h. Racing or practicing to race any motorized vehicle or watercraft;
i. Free diving; or
j. Scuba diving at a depth greater than 60 feet or without a dive master.

Suggest you check IMG. Pre-Covid(and pre-70) they had the kind of policies I think you are looking for.

@jkgaliger - thanks. I been checking out the IMG site, and must say it is far less useful than the Allianz one (so far). Not a hint at what's not covered. But maybe I'll keep digging there.

You probably won't get the answers digging on the insurer web page, but you might get a better one if you call them and ask specifically what triggers the exemption in the categories you're concerned about (e.g., what elevation constitutes "high altitude").
