Travel Insurance Feedback

I've read a lot of the posts regarding travel insurance, so my wife and I have decided to purchase coverage. Went to insuremytrip.com and did a quote for the following: 2 adults (age 40 and 36), $1250 non-refundable costs (mostly train tickets and a few days hotel), $250,000 medical, 31 days travel. Looking at the 22 results I think I've narrowed it down to the following policy.

Travel Insured-Worldwide Trip Protector Gold for $136 (By the Arch Insurance Company with an A.M Best Rating of A). Benefits include: Trip Cancellation-$625, Trip Interruption-$938, Baggage-$2500, Baggage Delay-$12+ hrs $500max, Travel Delay-6+hrs $200/day $1500 max, Medical-$250,000($50 deductible), Dental-$750included in medical, and Emergency Medical Evacuation-$1,000,000.

Since I've never purchased a policy before, just wanted to run this by the board experts here and see if anything above seems out of the ordinary, or if there's a gap. All of the coverages are Primary (including Evacuation) except Baggage, Medical and Dental, which are Secondary coverages. Policy costs ranged from $106 to $165. Thanks!

Kent-good point! I'm looking now and the cheapest evacuation only policy is $96 for unlimited coverage for evacuation but nothing else.

For a range of $118-$150 I found 6 policies under the "Travel Medical Policies" that cover medical and evacuation. Had anywhere from $250,000 to $500,000 for Medical Coverage (mine is $250,000) and $100,000-$500,000 for Evacuation (mine is $1,000,000). Most had $5000 for trip interruption (mine is $938), no cancellation coverage (mine is $625), up to $250 for baggage(mine is $2500), no Baggage Delay ((mine is $500), and no Travel Delay (mine is $200/day, $1500 max). If I had to choose one of those six I think it would be the Patriot International for $138.50. Unless I am looking in the wrong place seems my policy from Travel Insured Worldwide is a good deal??

A couple other questions....If I need to use the medical or evacuation, do you typically pay out of pocket and get reimbursed? What is the typical way for other reimbursements? Thanks!

Looking closely at the policy document download it looks like you have to submit your bills to them. :-(

I also have Group Health and talked to them the other day and they do cover medically necessary treatment abroad, but it's the same...pay up front and then submit. The policy quoted above is secondary for medical, so doubt I'd hit my limit on that with Group Health, but Group Health doesn't cover repatriation, and this Travel Insured policy does as a primary coverage, so that's good! Plus all the other benefits that come with it, so seems to be a decent deal. I'll probably sleep on it and look to buy tomorrow unless anyone else sees any issues with this! Thanks for the feedback Kent!

As Kent said, it looks like you've really done your homework. You seem to have considered it from all angles, and it looks like a good deal to me. My company health insurance covers medical and some med evac, but I always increase that. I tend to only get trip cancellation when there is considerable nonrefundable money involved, and I don't usually care too much about baggage, trip delay, etc. As you said, though, those things seem to be included for not much more than you'd pay for just the med evac. I'd say go for it.

Thanks Nancy! After sleeping on it we bought the Worldwide Trip Protector Gold for $136. As you said Nancy, seems that for not much more money we had all the other things thrown in. Not that I hope we ever need any of this, but the peace of mind will be nice. Really, I just wanted coverage if something catastrophic happened. Worst case, I'm sure we could make due stuck in Berlin a few extra days if our flight home is delayed! Thanks again for the feedback Kent and Nancy!

Last November I went to Israel on a 14 day tour. My travel companion was injured 3 weeks prior to the trip. Due to my Travel Inusrance I was provided a room all to myself. The Travel Insurance paid the difference.

Less than 14 hours after we landed in Tel Aviv, a lady on the trip died of a heart attack. The Travel Insurance paid for all the expenses of her husband escorting her body back to the United States. Plus paid for the preparation of the body for transport. And reimbursed them the full cost of the tour.

We had another lady fall and she required emergency room care along with stitches on her head. The Travel Insuranse paid.

A wise traveler never leaves home without Travel Insurance.

Enjoy your travels and rest assured you and your party will be taken care of in the event of an accident or delays.

Thanks JB! It is nice to know that there is an added layer of protection so one can just focus more on the trip and not worry needlessly about what if....

We leave in a bit over a month and feel like we're well on track with our planning, so now it's mostly just the excitement of going! This board has been a great help in this process for us, so thank you again to everyone who posts questions and answers.
