Travel in Jordan

My wife and I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has travelled into Jordan during the past 6 months. Our primary concern is safety and having to deal with locals sympathetic with the various terrorist movements. The three day journey in late October for the two of us will include being hosted by an Amman based travel company - which has been very helpful to date. We will have a private driver for our two night stay in Petra and one night in Amman. After meeting our driver at the Israeli - Jordan border, we will visit sites in Petra, Mt Nebo, Madaba, the Wadi Rum Desert and Amman. We will return to the border for crossing into Israel and flying home from Tel Aviv after 3 days of touring.

Thank you in advance for your input as we are close to cancelling the Jordan visit based on safety concerns by outsiders.

P.S. As an alternative, we are considering extending our formal 8 day Jerusalem, Gallilee and Holy Land tour by 4 days of travel in Israel. Any suggestions on alternative travel in Israel would also be appreciated. Thks.

The only thing I've heard - and this from offhand comments from friends - that there is some tension and anti-Israeli sentiments since a recent incident in Amman. But that should not affect you as American tourists. The only thing I'm unclear about is where you will be crossing the border out of and into Israel and how you will get to/from the border crossing on the Israeli side. There are 3 land crossings, the most common is at Eilat/Aqaba which is closest to Petra and the easiest and well-organized for tourists. There's the crossing at the King Hussein Bridge which is closest to Amman and Jerusalem which is used mainly by Palestinian workers and often has long delays - in one or both directions. If you are working independently with a Jordanian business (and not in conjunction with your Holy Land tour operator) be sure to have a phone so you can be in communication with your Jordanian driver.

I believe you will have to get your Jordanian visas in the U.S. before your trip.

If you want to stay in Israel and see more of our sights, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are pretty easy to explore on your own. There is a lot more to see in Jerusalem that what you'll visit on your tour.

I was in Jordan last year and will be there again on Wednesday, both times coming from Israel. Never felt anything but love. Enjoy Jordan!
