We are leaving from the Sarlat area on a Saturday morning and check in to a condo in the French Alps on Sunday at 5. What is the best route to take? Should we take the A72 over to Lyon? Or head south to Narbonne and come up through Provence and spend the night near Avignon? How long does each route take?
If you take the route that passes just south of Lyon, you can make it in about seven hours of driving. Leave early enough and you can almost call it half a day. There ain't much to stop and see, but the scenery is pretty good. Cutting down to Narbonne an back up would take maybe twelve hours since you have to stop more often for grub, gas, etc. Were I going to do this, I'd probably spend a week at it since there's so much around that begs attention. Heck, a month isn't enough. Take the fast way and save the southern area for another trip.
Try out the website http://www.viamichelin.com/ for car routes and approximate toll/gas costs. Pretty good info.
