Travel from Portugal to Netherlands

We are just in the initial stages of this trip plan. Our granddaughter is completing her studies near Amsterdam in late April 2020 so we want to meet up with her. We want to fly to Portugal in March 2020, have a good look and sense of the country and then make our way, perhaps by train or rental car and train towards Netherlands .....we thought we could spend overnight or 2 in N Spain ( Bilbao perhaps), then on to France and Brussels ( also overnights or more) and end in Netherlands where we would intensify our sightseeing. ..perhaps a total of 4 or 5 weeks in all and fly home from Netherlands. All suggestions are welcome ...we hope this is do able!!
Thank you

Picking up a rental car in one country and leaving it in another is quite expen$ive. ( when I have looked it seems to run $500-$800 extra, on top of the rental cost).

It may be worth it to you to incur that cost depending on how your itinerary eventually comes together.

Just a 'heads up' about the cost.

Yes, we are aware of the expense of car rentals with drop offs....We are thinking of probably just a rental car in Portugal ( except in Lisbon) , dropping it off and then taking the train for the rest of our trip and no car rentals...??

Thank you Scythian for your direct insight. As I said we are just starting our research and certainly Portugal ( where we have not been yet) and parts of Spain and France are always intriguing. We have travelled to Italy 6x’s and France 3 x’s and Spain once but would be happy to see more. The Netherlands will be different ,I suppose , but we are interested and will not focusa lot of time there. Travelling light is definitely something we have learned to do and we have taken trains and buses in Europe with luggage and managed well...
Also, I have used the train website you included and we will look at the sites you suggested....just great!

We spent 9 full days in Amsterdam, with 4 day trips (Edam - for the Wednesday cheese market, Haarlem, Delft, and Brugges) and loved every minute. We were never bored nor did we run out of sights to see. It was my second trip there and my companions first. We all said we would return it the opportunity arised.

Thank you...sounds very inviting and we will definitely spend time in Amsterdam and surrounds in the places you mentioned. We are just beginning our reading and research and this is so helpful.
