Travel from Paris to Rome with children

What are some interesting routes for a 4 day trip between Paris & Rome? We have a 10 yr. old and 13 yr. old travelling with us in late May/early June. Our 10 yr. old wants to see WWII history and castles. Is this doable in such a short timeframe? Other option would be Switzerland (Bern) then on to Pisa & Cinque Terre for a few days.

We'd prefer train, but will consider air travel if not too expensive. My husband wants to go to a third country enroute to Rome. My concern is our time and money constraints. We don't want it to be too expensive.

You can fly Easyjet for about 250 Euros including bags from Orly to Rome. I honestly don't know if you can drive through; if you could, you'd see the Chateau du Pape(destroyed in WWII) in the south of France or, in reverse, follow the route of Napoleon from Elba in Italy back to Paris. Along that route is some pretty neat castles, ect that we found really great with two 12 year olds' several years' past. You could drop the car at the coast, train to Italy, pick up a car and continue to Rome.

We'll be staying w/my brother for a week in Paris; hadn't planned on doing any driving b/c we thought it would be too expensive. I'll look into it, though. My 10 yr. old is into castles and history, so he'd really enjoy the Napolean route. Thanks!

To save you a bit of legwork:

carrentals.com and kayak.com show a standard size car (probably the smallest possible due to luggage) Paris to Rome, late May at about $1000

viamichelin.com shows tolls of about $200

my guess on gas (25 mpg / $7 gal gives $250
