Travel from Paris to Munich to Prague

I love planning ahead for travel! My husband and I are flying to Paris in June and this is the first Europe trip I've planned myself. I have since discovered that planning ahead isn't really something you can do here for some things. Originally my plan was to rent a car and drive from Paris to Munich (with little stops in between) and then from Munich to Prague a few days later and leave the car there. It turns out there is an enormous fee to drop off the car in another country, so that option is officially out. We are set on going to Munich now for a few days and then we need to get to Prague to start our Topdeck tour.

I found a flight from Paris to Munich for around 50 euros each. Does this seem to be the norm for flights or will I be able to find something cheaper closer to the date?

As far as trains go, how much can I expect to pay approximately from Paris to Munich and from Munich to Prague? I'd consider an overnight trip to save on accommodations on one leg if possible. The whole pass situation confuses me. Is this something I should consider as well? I'll also be travelling from London to Paris at the end of our trip if that makes a difference.

Ideally I'd like to spend as little time as possible travelling since we won't be able to see the sights between stops now, but I don't want to spend a small fortune either.

Any tips and recommendations for travelling between cities would be greatly appreciated!

Go to Duetschebahn trip planner http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

Put all caps PARIS and Munich your date of travel. You'll see two prices, the low price is for if you buy a ticket now, that is only refundable with a 19 EUR fee up to the day before you travel. The larger price is the any time changeable ticket price.

The Munich to (all caps) PRAGUE. Same deal. Your best price and quickest is likely to be an IC bus.

Thanks! Unfortunately my dates are too far away right now for any of the cheaper options. Are prices similar on each day of the week even if it's fall versus summer?

You really need to give a time frame, and what you hope to achieve in that time frame.

If it's just A to B, Paris to Munich, then I would fly. More time in Munich would allow for greater time sightseeing in and around the city.
There is a direct train, taking 5hr 40min, for a more leisurely trip between the two.
You could make an overnight stop along the route at Strasbourg for example.

Train directly from Munich to Prague.
Eurostar from London to Paris. .

My husband and I rode the IC Bus/Train combo from Prague to Munich (via Nuremberg) in August; I purchased Savings Fare tickets for a total of 59.80 euros. The IC Bus-only Savings Fare tickets for the same route are 39.80 euros. (The fares are the same for Munich to Prague.) If you purchase these discounted tickets they are valid only for the specific time/transport chosen. They can be purchased on the bahn.de website up to six months in advance. We found the bus to be very comfortable! Enjoy planning your trip!

There are direct trains from Munich to Prague, presently four a day, from Dec. 10 onwards seven. The DB travel planner tends to hide them (they are operated by a different company) in favour of it's IC buses. You can make visible them on the DB system by requesting an intermediate stop in Schwandorf; the trains have a ALX prefix; ignore the price shown - it's the official international fare but you can get it way cheaper, cf. no. 2 below. Those trains are slower than the bus (approx 1 hour) but more convenient and there is no need for committing to a specific bus.

There are several methods to buy tickets for those trains:

  1. Look up at the e-shop of the Czech Rail if there is a special Europe fare available, which can be very cheap (starting from €15). Alternatively, check the price for a normal flexible ticket "München - Praha" (starting from €25).

  2. Else, buy a "Prag Spezial" ticket aboard the ALX train (in the snack car called "Alex Treff") for €36 (details on the web site of the carrier, German only)

  3. Combine a Bayern Ticket (€25/1, €31/2, valid till the border station Furth im Wald) with a normal Czech ticket from Furth im Wald to Prague (€13 to €16, so somewhat cheaper than option 2 if two people travel together). I'd avoid a fourth option, viz. the "Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket", valid to Plzn but not good for every train in Czechia.

Our flight from Munich to Paris was $59 each. I don't think you'll find much better than that.

Paris-Munich train tickets range from €40 to €150 per person in 2nd class. For travel next June, some trains to and from Paris go on sale as early as late December, so check back from that time. Comparing flights, $50 or €50 is a typical price but again with advance booking. www.skyscanner.com shows that rate currently available on more than half the days of October, but all higher for September travel. In each case, the number of seats sold at a lower price is limited and there are several price points. There is no overnight train on any of your routes.

Planning a similar trip in March - starting in Scotland to Paris and on to Munich. Rick Steves is on Public TV here in Maine and I've learned so much! Have a great list of places to see and how to do that.

Getting ready to book a flight between Paris and Munich, to save some time. First week of trip all train! Thanks to ALL of you, we are going to try a flight. Just double-checking for hints to make this run smoothly. Bon Voyage.
