Travel from Germany to Northern Italy

I am wanting to rent a car in Frankfurt and drive to the south of Germany. I want to drop off the car and catch a train to any town in northern Italy. Any help would be appreciated!

We leased a car in Amsterdam and dropped it in Rome. Our drive took us through southern Germany and western Austria then through the Brenner Pass into Italy.

When you drop a rented car in a different country, the price goes up a ton. I would suggest dropping the car in Munich (or closer to Salzburg), visit Salzburg by train, then train from there to Verona to begin your time in Italy.

This is a view from the train looking up at part of the Brenner Pass highway that you will be driving on.

Hi Debbie,

Another option is to return the car in Garmisch and train to Italy via Innsbruck. Drop off fees from one country to another are steep.

By the way, the photo of the Brenner Pass bridge (Europa Bridge) is VERY misleading. It's actually a six lane highway span (3 lanes each direction) and you'd never know you were that high up. We've driven it many times.

Paul's thoughts about dropping the car off in Garmisch is a good idea. This way you will have the same view as Lee did--looking up at the Brenner Pass highway from the train. Check with AutoEurope for car rentals. Have fun!

Lee,

When you're driving, however, you don't really notice it. It's not much different than driving on any other freeway.

Lee's Train Promotion Program is shameless!

I agree with you Karen. As a last resort, try the "scare tactics".
