What is the best way to travel between Bacharach and Reims? I would like the fewest hours and lowest cost. I recognize I may have to start somewhere else, such as Mainz Germany and possibly end up in Paris. I see car rental drop-off fees are very high (total for two days is $333) and trains seem to take a long roundabout way to get there. Any suggestions?
Well, regardless, you will be starting in Bacharach, but go onto the Bahn.de site and start playing around, looking at routes and costs.
A quick look showed travel times of just over 6 hours to just over 7 hours. There were several options, all required multiple connections, mostly within Germany (Mainz, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Karlsruhe, Offenburg, etc.) but basically that just took you to Strasbourg where you catch a train to Reims. No need to go through Paris, but no quick way to get there either.
If you want to rent a car in Reims, you only need to get to Champagne-Ardennes TGV station just outside of Reims. There is an Avis location at the station. Assuming you have a car in Bacharach, drive to Karlsruhe and drop the car there. Then its a TGV to Strassbourg, leaving 13:33, changing to a train to Champagne-Ardennes arriving at 16:54 with an advance purchase Prem's fare of 48 euro.
Thank you Paul and Sam. I'll look into your suggestions.
