travel clothes for teen girl?

I'm heading to Ireland, England and France in 2 weeks with a teen (16) who, I didn't think about until today, only wears jeans. Took her to REI to try on various travel pants so we could wash them in the rooms on the trip and she looked horrified when she tried them on. Very old lady/mom-like apparently. Does anyone have a teen who liked a certain brand or do you have any suggestions for teen friendly clothes that dry well? Thank you

Teens in Europe wear jeans. Let your daughter bring at least one or two pairs. Forget the old ladies clothes. LOL ,

You are only going for two weeks , so two pairs of jeans should easily cover at least six days. Then a pair of capris( they have ones that are "in" at young peoples clothing stores )and a skirt or sundress and daughter is set.
Daughter will have to watch what other stuff she packs to keep weight down, remember to limit shoes as they are usaully heavy . My daughter is taking one pair of runners, one pair of walking sandals, and one pair of ballet flats. She will wear runners on plane and only have to pack the two other pairs which are very lightweight.

Old Navy! I've bought cargo capris, tanks, t-shirts, tops etc., that travel well.

Linda,
I would suggest that your daughter bring just a few clothes...and let her shop in Europe! The Fall clothes should be out soon, and she will be the envy of her school when she comes back with the latest fashions. Last time I was in Europe I hardly took anything and bought boots, jeans, sweaters, etc. and they were no more expensive than here in the US. Make sure you check out the markets for great deals,,,and go ahead and barter in the markets...the vendors expect that! She will only need a few pieces of eurpean fashions to be up to date. And..Linda, make sure you get a special piece of clothes for yourself. There is nothing like wearing a great sweater and someone stopping you to ask where you bought it..and you can say PARIS!!
Have a great time with your daughter and really experience all that Europe has to offer. This is a chance of a lifetime to do this with her. I wish I had had the chance with my mother before she passed...I say go do the crazy stuff that you never thought you would...go to a pub, go to a club..all that and really BOND with your daughter. My daughter and I took a trip like this and we had a ball! We went out to a club and danced to the oldies(what a hoot..she like mom's moves on the dance floor!) when shopping in those bra boutiques..never has such a fancy undergarmet..but I can say we had the best time and really learned alot about each other!!!
Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!

I agree - Old Navy. They have many styles of pants and capris. If she only wears jeans, she might be uncomfortable in anything else. I only wear jeans at home (I am a mom with kids that spill on me and jeans hide stains!). When I traveled last year, I tried wearing other pants and to be honest I was uncomfortable. Unless you are moving rooms everyday - the jeans can hang for a day or two to dry.

Fashion Bug also has cute clothes which work well traveling. And another endorsement for Old Navy. Have a great trip!

Linda - unless you have a reason for the teen to wear nicer clothes, let her bring whatever she wants. Quite honestly I would never wear the REI travel pants to Europe either so I understand her horror. Young people wear jeans all the time. They also, for the most part, don't seem to get as hot as many adults do. She can bring what she wants with the caveat being that she must carry it all herself and you should also tell her what suitcase she can bring. For instance, if you have no intention of checking bags then her stuff must fit into a carryon size bag. As for washing clothes - just make it clear how often and in what fashion she is able to do laundry and again, let her decide. My son brought 2 pairs of jeans and one pair of nice pants for Italy last year - this was when it was VERY hot. We never washed the pants during the 2 weeks we were there. He never complained of the heat (though I was dying in my VERY lightweight skirts), and had no problem wearing the same pants several days in a row.

Now if she is actually looking for advice or would take advice from others on how to be both stylish and comfortable, then yes, she should bring capris and/or skirts as well as the all important jeans.
If you still want to buy her new clothes then I do second the suggestion of Old Navy. Their stuff is pretty lightweight and inexpensive. My daughter took a lot of their clothes on our trips when she was a teen.

The only thing I don't go for is the idea of buying stuff in Europe. Now that my daughter has been in France for the year, she is able to find lots of cute clothes that are in her budget range. But on family trips, when we did actually allow a few hours for shopping we found it harder to find more than one or two items that worked for us. We just didn't have the time to find out where to go and didn't want to allocate more time away from sightseeing.

Have a great trip!

I agree. Let the teen wear whatever she wants. And if you pack light, its also a great way to go shopping to compliment her travel wardrobe.

Keep in mind the time of the year you're going. If its August, check the weather. Even London has their day of warm weather (yes, serously!)

Linda, I got that "Look" a few days ago! I guess i'm not as fashionable as I used to be :)
I have decided to let my girls (12&14) pack what they want and hope for the best. I did suggest the other day that my 12 year old wear her jeans outside the house (it was about 32 degrees, or about 95 farenheit).
After about 10 minutes, she came in and said it was too hot with jeans. I pointed out that Italy will be just as hot when we are there.
I think she will decide to bring capri's and light weight pants.
Good Luck and enjoy, they are only this age for a short time!!

I'm 34 years old, and I wouldn't wear "travel pants" in a million years! Yikes!

Target or Old Navy should have some cute capris or other lightweight pants, if you can get her out of jeans.

First take her to LL Bean, then REI will look cutting edge fashion, LOL!

Old Navy, Aeropostale, American Eagle, A&F, and a couple of others have lots of clothes teens love. Of the group, Old Navy and Aeropostale are the most likely to carry clothes in other than 100% cotton. Juniors sections at department stores are also worth a look, they always have something on sale.

Cotton is nice when you can wash and tumble dry after every wear. For travel, try to at least get blends - they will better survive hand-washing and line-drying. They don't grab stains like cotton. They also wrinkle less and tend to keep their shape better.

The goal is to find clothes she will like that can mix/match, be layered and are made of a fabric that travels well.

She may want to wear flip-flops the entire time, which is fine, but she should bring at least one backup walking shoe (maybe trail runners in a darker neutral tone) with some hiking socks as well as something to look nice in (sandals that can dress up).

I think jeans are great at home but too heavy, bulky and hard to clean on the road. The more of an issue you make it, the harder it will be (and you can never, never say "I told you so" to a teen girl) so you may just have to let her learn the hard way.

I think she might like microfiber capris in an olive or khaki color. Skirts are also great when it's warm (although I recall teens in Spokane wearing minis or shorts, low canvas shoes or flip-flops, no socks and a sweatshirt when there was snow on the ground), they can be casual with flip-flops and a tee, or dressed up for dinner with nicer sandals and a sweater.

Another idea is to leave some clothes unpacked with an eye toward buying outfits in Europe. It's a better idea, however, when the exchange rate is more favorable.

We just got back from Scotland and Netherlands. All this worry and talk about what to wear is a bunch of hooey. If you are going to a "fashion city" like Paris or Milan, yes, bring something a little more fashionable.

The locals EVERYWHERE we went were wearing what we do at home - including tacky T-shirts with cutsey characters on them. (we're talking adults, here) The only people "dressed up" were on their way to work.

I wore jeans, tennis shoes, flip-flops, sandals, chinos and mostly solid colored T-s. With a pashima or any other scarf, you were lookin' good. I would have worn shorts, too, if the weather would have been with us.

Don't worry about all these people saying you HAVE to leave your wonderful, comfortable stuff at home. My guess is that they are much older travelers. I am 48 and was completely comfortable with what I had on and feel I fit right in.

I would not wear REI or any of those clothes made specifically for travelling. Let your daughter take her jeans, some cute tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, skirt(s), sun dresses i.e. cute things. Clothing for girls do not weigh as much as mens clothing. Don't focus too much on making her wear things she considers "old women" type clothing. She won't be happy and neither would you in the long run. Capri jeans are nice too.
