I'm asking this on behalf of a freind I made on a RS tour this year. She is travelling back from Stockholm and due to land in JFK on Saturday at 4.15 pm. She then has to get to Virginia. She's wondering what to do. I have suggested she either change her plans and stay in Stockholm til it's over or re-route (if she can) through somewhere like Chicago.
If anyone has any other ideas, they would be very welcome. Thank you.
I think it's safe to say at this point there's no chance she is going to be on that flight. I think she needs to call her airline ASAP and see if they have already moved her flight around. If they haven't, she should go ahead and try to secure another route. I got stuck in behind a massive snow storm this winter and my flight route was changed 3 different times in 1 day but I eventually made it after 2 layovers and 3 days. Unfortunately Virginia is in the path as well. I wish her the best and hope she isn't one of those poor people that has to sleep in the airport. If it were me and I didn't have an alternate route already, I'd plan a couple extra days in Stockholm. Best wishes to everybody in the path of this thing.
Thanks Leslie and Tom. She's been in touch with the airline and they say the flight is still scheduled- but I'm sure it'll be cancelled.
I'll send her that link Tom.
Highly likely her flight will be cancelled. Obviously she should stay in touch with her airline. The hurricane is supposed to hit New York City Saturday and they're already ordering evacuation of low-lying areas. All public transportation is going to be shut down starting at noon Saturday. She can monitor the situation here: http://tinyurl.com/3srqmaf
She should be making arrangements to extend her stay in Stockholm as an option. I think I would call the airline and insist on delaying for three or four days. The potential for damage in NY is high and could be several days before full operations resume. Could she come in via Washington, DC? My son who lives in the E Village within a couple blocks of the East river has been ordered out by 5 pm Saturday. NY is taking this seriously.
Thanks Frank. I haven't heard back from her, so I think she must be busy making arrangements.
I appreciate all your help. She has limited access to the internet where she is which is why I was asking on her behalf.
The mass transit system in NYC for all the boroughs is shutting down at noon on Saturday. I cannot imagine that flights will be coming into JFK. Also, Mayor Bloomberg has ordered mandatory evacuations from Zone A by 5 PM Saturday. JFK is right next to that area and all that I've heard is that it will close. She can sign up for alerts on JFK airport at this link. http://www.airportinfoalerts.com/alertsignupjfk.aspx Pam
Just heard on the news that JFK is closing to International Flights tomorrow at noon. So she recontact her airline. Pam
Thanks to everyone for your help. Apparently the airline has re-routed her thru Paris, Atlanta, on to Charleston. Hmmm. We'll see. Thank you all again. Best wishes Maggie
I'm curious, Maggie ;-)
How did your friend fare??
Hi Diane, she got home yesterday- it took a couple of days but she did it. Am very thankful she's safe. And it was so good to be able to ask and recieve help here. Thanks again.
