Transportation Question - Arles, France to Siena, italy

My husband and I will be in France (Paris, Beaune, Arles) for two weeks this May - ending our stay on May 26. On May 28 we need to be in Siena, Italy for three nights to reunite with a friend.

We are working on how to travel between the two (Arles and Siena) and where best to stay the nights of May 26 and May 27. We do not wish to get a rental car.

Train?

We have explored Arles to Cinque Terre and realize that would be 9-10 hours by train.
If train, break up trip with overnight stop in Nice? Second night in Cinque Terre or Lucca?

Fly?

What airports in southern France are best to fly out of to Pisa? Florence? Rome? And then take train on to Siena?

Any ideas/options/responses for this transportation question are much appreciated.

You don't want to rent a car, so that narrows it down.
It's actually a nice train ride because it allows you to use May 26 and 27 to stay in some interesting places: Nice would be one and Monaco would be another, although Monaco can be done as a partial day.
Nice and Florence would also be places to overnight on the 26th and 27th.
Cinque Terre could be a possible 2nd night.
One night hotel stands are tough, but that's the way your itinerary has worked out.

Kent-
Thanks for the response and ideas for places to stay overnight on a train journey.
Don't prefer the one night stays but it is what it is....we have multiple nights stays for our other cities throughout the trip.

ms,

One option you could use on this route is.....

  • Train to Marseille - Provence airport - from Arles that will take about 2H:15M, with at least two changes with one being a Bus.
  • Flight to Rome - easyJet shows daily flights on that route, however flight times are all different. On May 26, the flight departs at 21:10, arriving 22:35.
  • Train to Siena (about 4.25 H. from the airport, depending on which train you connect with).

I only checked one flight option on that route, and there certainly could be others. With this route, you could spend a night or two in Rome or other nearby place such as Orvieto before going to Siena.

Another method you could use is......

  • Train from Arles to Nice (about 4.5 hours to Nice Ville)
  • Spend one or two nights in Nice
  • Train to Siena (about 8-9 hours with minimum 3 changes, depending on which train you use).

FYI, although train travel along the coast is the common choice, and has good stops available, the train route with the fewest connections actually goes north through the mountains, 13.5 hours with changes at Valence, Chambery, Torino, and Florence. It uses fast trains that would be more expensive than the coastal trains. Most people would stick to the coastal route.
