Transportation from Naples to Positano and then Sienna

We are flying into Naples and meeting friends who are taking train to Naples.

What is best way to get to Positano? Saw there is shuttle bus from airport. So friends would have to come to us or do we go to them at train station and take boat to Sorrento and then Positano. Or do we hire a limo?

Then what is best way to get to Sienna? Can we go inland to a train station or do we have to go back to Naples via boat or bus?

You have to define what you mean by "best."

If you mean easiest, that would be a prebooked car that would meet you at the airport, stop at the Naples train station to pick up your friends, and then take you all to Positano. Based on what I've read on this Forum, that will cost something like €100-150. If there are four of you, it's a good deal, given the complexity of the alternatives, particularly if you are arriving jetlagged from the US.

There are multiple taxi services in this region - search these Forums or ask here for recommendations, and e-mail them directly for price quotes. Or, see who your hotel recommends.

All other methods involve multiple transfers. You can take a boat from Naples to Positano (in season and weather-permitting), but you all have to get from the airport and the train station to the dock. You can take a bus from Naples airport to Sorrento, but then you have to take another bus from Sorrento to Positano. Your friends can take the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Sorrento, but then they have to take that same bus from Sorrento to Positano. Then you have to get from the bus stop to your hotel - potentially un-fun in very hilly Positano.

For Positano to Siena, you either take a boat to Naples and then Trenitalia trains to Siena, a bus to Sorrento and the Circumvesuviana to Naples and then Trenitalia trains to Siena, or a bus to Amalfi connecting to a bus to Salerno and then Trenitalia trains to Siena. Or again, you can use a prebooked car to Napoli Central station, costing more but much easier.

I do hope you're staying in Positano for at least a few days, to make all this schlepping worthwhile. If you're not, you now understand why so many stay in Sorrento instead.
