Train Vienna to Ljublana

We are in Europe in September. What train do people recommend we take from Vienna to Ljublana?

Thanks!

See your choices at https://www.oebb.at/en/.

For that particular journey, also consider Flixbus, which seems to take a whole hour less. Buses in Europe are generally safe and comfortable, although admittedly the ability to walk around is severely limited compared to a train. However, buses have mandatory rest stops.

A train that goes to Ljubljana that fits your itinerary. Buses are also an option, but trains are more comfortable.

From Vienna you also have the night train option run by OeBB Night Jet...I would do that. All depends on your travel style.

No Nightjets to Slovenia. Although you can take the Nightjet to Venice, alight in Villach and catch a connecting train to Ljubljana. But the Nightjet arrives 05.00 in Villach so it would not be my choice.

Thank for the info.

Arriving in Villach in the summer at 5 AM would do fine, no problem.

When I looked at the OBB, there's only about 5 or 6 minutes transfer time in Graz - is that enough time to make the connection? If we don't make it, can we just get on the next train?

This is my interpretation of the schedule - I've abbreviated it from the schedule. I'm assuming this means we need to get from Platform 3 to Platform 2 D-E and we have 7 minutest to do it - is that correct? If so, is that enough time?

leaves Vienna at 10:17 from (Pl.7A-B)

arrives Villach Hbf at 14:46 at (Pl.3)

Transfer
leaves 14:53 from (Pl.2D-E)

Thanks.

From Platform 3 to Platform 2 is a cross-platform change. Your connecting train will be waiting for you (it originates in Villach), so you exit and cross the platform and to sections D & E, which may be directly across from you, or a short walk away. Should take about 2 minutes to make the change.

Since the train to Ljubljana originates in Villach, they are likely to hold it if your inbound is delayed. It looks like a designed connection.

Sam - thanks so much. I figured that's probably the case.
