Train travel UK, Ireland, Scotland

As we get into our early 70’s, we’ve really appreciated traveling almost exclusively by train. Had great luck last year in Italy and Switzerland and this year throughout Spain. Looking to spend time in Ireland, Scotland and England. This year we did rent a car for the Pyrenees and traveled some really skinny roads. I understand that roads in Ireland are really narrow. And of course, driving on opposite side of the road. Frankly it’s just hard to relax when the driving is challenging.

How is the train system in these countries? Can we make it work efficiently and see most places?

Have limited experience with the train in Ireland just to stay outside Dublin but if was fine but I think it is very limited. We just returned from a month in England and Scotland using trains and a few buses. We thought the train system.was excellent, all the train stations and bathrooms were clean and well located. Traveled to York, Bath and some.day trips from London.. Also day trips from Edinburgh and Glasgow. Train from.Edinburgh to London and then Eurostar to Paris. Very easy to navigate and would do.it again..We are.your age and have used car in all those places several times and this time decided on public transport and would do it again.

In Britain, the train system is extensive and it's supplemented by an extensive bus system.

In Ireland, the trains are limited as to where they go but the bus service is extensive.

By using a combination of the two, you can get just about anywhere by public transport.

www.transportforireland.ie is your one stop planning tool for all public transport in Ireland. Bus services, even in very rural areas, are being improved at quite a rate.
And generally for buses you use the stored value leap card to pay fares, which are normally 30% cheaper paid that way. The major exceptions being the private companies on the long distance routes from Dublin Airport.
