Train travel, Scotland to Avignon

I will be traveling between Edinburgh Scotland and Florence Italy in October, 2017. I would like to spend a couple days in Avignon on the way. I am looking for suggestions on the best/ fastest way to travel. Everything I have looked at involves a full day of waiting in airport's or changing terminals.

I wasn't sure this was for a holiday or a TopGear Challenge! But it is possible in one day (which will come as a surprise to the people of both cities!!). Mondays-Fridays

Edinburgh dep 06:26 - London Kings Cross arr. 10:51

cross the road to Eurostar

London St Pancras dep. 12:24 - Paris Nord arr 15:47

cross Paris by taxi or RER subway

Paris Lyon dep. 16:37 - Avignon TGV arr 19:17

I have no idea how much it would cost or the best way to buy it!! But I'd recommend Standard Premier on Eurostar because lunch would be included and you'll need feeding.......

There are non stop flights from Edinburgh to Marseille on Ryan Air and it's a short bus ride from the airport to Avignon. Only problem is the flight is available only on Monday or Friday. You might want to check flights from Glasgow as well.

There's also a 12:58 Eurostar departure from London to Lille. Connecting in Lille is easier than connecting by taxi across Paris. The 15:54 TGV departure from Lille goes to Avignon TGV station, and from there you take a 5-minute train ride into town. Sunday schedules are different.

Avignon to Florence is also not a short train ride. Choose between 10 hours with 4 connections or 11 hours with 3 connections. An additional stay in Nice could break that up. There are nonstop flights from Marseille to Venice or Rome but not to the airports nearer Florence.

See www.skyscanner.com for a flight search. Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it.
