Train Pass Suggestions

Greetings,

I’ve received some helpful information from RS’s travel forums previously and I’m seeking some advice again. Our plans are coming together nicely but now need to figure out train.
I am trying to figure out if we should purchase the Eurail Global Pass for our trip or if another pass suggestion seems better.

I’ll add where our plans are to help figure which pass is recommended -it is looking like approx 13ish days of train…

Venice Italy -2 nights (won’t need train while in Venice but to depart)
Vernazza Italy -2 nights
Zermatt -Switzerland -2 nights
Mürren Switzerland -4 nights
Basel Switzerland -1 night
Tübingen Germany -2 nights
…5 days no train -we’ll be with family w/ car
Salzburg Austria -1 night
Munich Germany -1 night

Also, when we’ll be in Mürren Switzerland, is it recommended to purchase 1/2 fare card or other?…we’ll be hiking mostly but want to take all transport to see Jungfrau as well as Gimmelwald.

Thank you in advance.

For that trip I would suggest not to get a Eurail Pass. Eurail is not good value in Switzerland, and a sure way to overpay for transport in Italy. And it makes things more complicated.

Buying the HFC for Switzerland will be a good option. You will earn back that investment on the Jungfrau trip alone.

You can see the Jungfrau from many places, or do you mean going to the Jungfraujoch?

Sam,
Yes, that is what I meant. I’m not sure if it’s worth actually going up to though.

WengenK,

Thank you for that helpful information. Do you suggest purchasing tickets as we go including obtaining the HFC once in Switzerland?
