Hello all,
I can't seem to make a decision on which pass is best for our travel next week! Flying into Munich - train to Vienna - will use train to visit Melk; train Vienna to Lucerne; train/gondolas while in Lucerne then to Murren; train/gondola Murren to Zurich (fly out of).
Will take boat ride on Lucerne, no museum visits, gondolas to Rigi, Schilthorn. I had planned to just buy a Swiss half fare card but now I'm wondering if a Eurail pass is better.
Any recommendations? Many thanks!!
pumpkin,
Have you checked maninseat61 website? He answers just about every train-related question.
To each their own, so take this reply with that grain of salt, but personally I no longer do Eurail passes. I have in the past (including back when you could get an all-Europe 3-month pass), but catching trains is just so easy and cost-effective in Europe that it seems superflous to bother with (and pay the high cost of) a Eurail pass. And of course you have enhanced flexibility in case you want to expand beyond three countries once you're there. There can be some tricky gymnastics when synchronizing train schedules, such as from Lake Bled to Venice which I did last year, but that will be the case with or without a pass.
Thank you Judy & Kelson for your thoughtful replies. We have decided to purchase the Swiss half fare pass for our time there.
