Has anyone taken a leisure train trip Oslo to Amsterdam? We hope to stay overnight in a few stops along the way. Should we buy a rail pass or individual train tickets? We like a flexible schedule. Is the trip scenic? Thank you.
Well it depends, how much time do you have and what would you like to see along the way?
The most obvious stops (because you would have to change trains for most parts) would be Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Hamburg (and/or Lübeck). If you skip Gothenburg, there is an overnight ferry between Oslo and Copenhagen.
The overall route is nice enough, but not outright scenic in my opinion.
Flexible or last minute train tickets can be expensive to cover these long distances. A multi-country Eurail pass can be too. Flying is usually cheapest (www.skyscanner.com).
However, if you want to travel flexibly by train as you said, the best-priced rail pass to consider right now is probably the deeply discounted Eurail Global pass covering 5 days of travel within a month in most of Europe - $345 (nonrefundable) for an adult in 2nd class if you purchase before June 3. This is less than the regular rate for a pass covering 4 countries.
