I have literally spent this entire day trying to get information on train schedules and prices for a trip we are taking this July from Paris to Kandersteg, Switzerland. Help! Does anyone have any information as to what website I should use? Our trip isn't until July, but even plugging in a random date in January still doesn't work. Thank you for any help you can give me. Linda
I input Paris to Kandersteg for a day next week at https://www.sbb.ch/en and got results. It is 5-6 hours for most routes with 2 to 3 train changes.
You'll end up buying 2 tickets, one in advance.
From Paris to Switzerland, you'll want to take the bullet train, either Paris to Geneva or Paris to Basel.
I know the one to Geneva (and probably Basel too) leaves from Gare de Lyon in Paris. Buy this in advance to get a discount, plus you need to reserve your seats anyway. That fast train takes about 3 hours and you can buy it from www.trainline.eu . More info on these trains is at www.seat61.com
From Geneva, it's about another 3 hours to Spiez (via Bern, change trains there) where you take a short train ride to Kandersteg. This train ticket can be bought the day of travel, and you can just ask for Geneva-Spiez-Kandersteg which can be on ticket. It's fairly rare to get an advance discount on these tickets within Switz., but you can check www.sbb.ch/en Realize that the first price they quote assumes a half fare card, so double it for the usual fare.
You can buy a through ticket from www.sbb.ch/en. And they do give you advance purchase discounts, at least for the portion from Paris to the arrival city in Switzerland, like Basel, Geneva, or Lausanne.
This website is my bible for traveling from point A to point B, anywhere in the world. Give it a try and you'll feel like you can go anywhere! It will show you all possible ways for getting from here to there.
