Train from Paris to Florence

Hello, we are travelling in July from Paris to Florence by train. My question is, should I change trains in Milan or Turin? Is one journey more scenic than the other? The transfer time for Milan is about 28 minutes, but Turin change is about 2 hours. Has anyone done this journey, and if so, where did you change trains and did it leave you enough time?

Thanks
Tania

There is no particular advantage in changing in one station or another. The one thing you might consider is the time of the transfer. That is going to be a long trip. Depending on the timing, maybe you could use the two hours in Turin to have a nice lunch/dinner instead of eating on the train. If you cannot use the two hours productively, then I would opt for the Milan station. The Milan station is large with lots of services - restaurants, grocery store, etc. Twenty eight minutes for a change is huge for trains.

Are you sure the two trains are going different routes? From Paris to Milan, I think all trains go through Turin. And possibly from Turin to Florence you either go through Milan or join the route from Milan soon thereafter.
When you look up the times, you can expand each train and see the intermediate stops, so you can check which route each takes. Since you don't say which two trains, I can't check myself.

Hi, Chris F.
I am looking on Loco2.com for my train information. My travel dates are not open yet, so I am using June 5 as an trial. Currently there are 2 options. 1.) Paris via Milan to Florence 9hrs 46 min. Map shows route through Switzerland
2.) Paris via Turin to Florence 9hrs 46 min. Map shows route just west of Switzerland. I know this is a "as the crow flies" reference, but the route only shows 1 change, so I am not quite sure how the same train does both Milan and Turin. I could be missing something, which is one of the reasons I am seeking some input. Any advice would be great. First leg is TGV 9241, second is Frecciarossa 9569. (This one date shows only 1hr 6min interchange in Turin as compared to a previous search for a different day on the schedule).

When I look on the Rome2Rio site, there are 2 separate routes. By bypassing Turin, using only Milan, the route takes you through Switzerland. By going via Turin, you bypass Switzerland all together and go south through Lyon, Turin, Milan onto Florence. A bit confusing.....
Thanks again.

If the train goes via Switzerland, then schedules will also show a connection time in Switzerland, and tickets will probably be more expensive. All direct Paris-Italy TGV and overnight trains go via Modane, Turin, and Milan, but not Switzerland.

Looking Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the Deutsche Bahn train schedule link and tips for using it.

If you use www.bahn.com to look at the schedule, click on "details" then "show intermediate stops". You'll see the 9 hour 46 minute route with a 28 minute change in Milan, goes Lyon, Chambery, Modane, Bardonnechia, Milano Porta Garibaldi station, with a 28 minute change to a train to Florence S.M.N.

The later train (10:19) uses the same route with a 12 minute change in Turin Porta Susa and takes 8 hours an 34 minutes. It saves time with a shorter change time and it short cuts going into Lyon Part Dieu by stopping at Lyon airport instead.

Note carefully that Milano PG is NOT the same as Milano Centrale.
