There has been some talk about how crowded Europe has become as all of the post COVID pent up desire to travel has come into full swing.
I think some of it is really that we just forgot how crowded it was prior and part of it may be that RS people tend to go to a certain group of places that really is have a growth in tourism.
Europe in general, however, did not reach 2019 levels in 2023, but came very close.
The prediction for this year is that Europe in general will exceed 2019 levels by 3 or 4 percent. Just imagine how much it would have exceeded 2019 if there had been no COVID.
From what I have read, a few places have already exceeded 2019 while many are still behind 2019. Good to know if you are trying to plan a trip and want to avoid the crowds.
London, Paris, Rome and Spain and Portugal in general exceeded their 2019 numbers in 2023 and 2024 is predicted to be a record year.
Some of Central Europe and all of Eastern Europe is still behind 2019 levels. My tourist city, Budapest, is still a little behind 2019 numbers. Another oddity is who is coming. The single most frequently heard tourist language in Budapest is Spanish by a wide, wide margin. Asian tourists also appear to be way up over previous years. Americans are few and far between and much fewer British stag parties (I hear they prefer Spain these days).
If crowds discourage you, then do some digging around on the destinations you are considering. You might be surprised at the 2024 predictions.
The specific information is hard to find, i use statistica and googled individual country numbers, but these two articles are interesting.
