Tour Review- Gate 1 essentials Poland

This sounds awesome, Carol! I particularly like this:

"When she noticed a large number of group members were interested in a particular museum, she offered to take a group by tram to teach them the public transport system and assist in getting to the museum."

Having help learning a new transit system is invaluable!

Thanks so much for sharing. Although we have gone on 2 Gate 1 Tours and I have another one picked out for 2028, I didn't know about the Essentials Tours. We would love those!
EDITED: As a result of your post, we are looking at the Central Europe Essentials tour next May to go after my husband speaks at a meeting in Wroclaw. We would add Krakow on our own at the end of the Gate 1 tour.

I am usually not a fan of tours but this one seems to hit differently since it gives one the possibility to wander alone. Thanks for sharing. I look forward to reading your trip report later!

I was JUST in Krakow (Sep 5-9) so it appears our paths almost crossed.

We love Gate 1 Travel's tours. We have never done an essentials tour, because we want to do all the activities available.
Still, their tours are always very reasonably priced.

I greatly appreciate your comments, Carol, since you continue to choose a nice variety of methods for traveling in Europe. This one sounds like a huge win for solo travelers, especially, when catching their waived single supplement costs. I know you mentioned once that specific times of the year they advertise the chance to have the single supplement costs dropped. Which months were those advertised?

For those not aware, that’s similar in format to the Rick Steves “My Way” tours, except no optional sightseeing tours and few or no orientation walks. Just the hotels (w breakfast), transportation between hotels, and advice and info from the tour manager. I haven’t been on one, just judging from the descriptions. They don’t offer it to very many destinations.

I also thought it was similar to the RS My Way but the Gate 1 hotels will have elevators and AC.

Thanks for posting. These are really a good option for folks who like independent travel but appreciate having the some of the logistics between stops handled.

A nit pick... Not a deal-killer cuz you're gonna want to compare apples to apples anyway..... but does anybody think it's a bit misleading to count the day you fly from NYC as the first day of the trip? (Day 2 is when you arrive)
example:

DAY 1, Tuesday- Depart for Greece
Depart for Greece
DAY 2, Wednesday - Arrive in Athens
Arrive in Athens, the classical capital of Greece; transfer to your hotel. Counting days…. Not a big deal. You will note I described my tour as 6 nights which it is. Many tour companies, especially those with optional air services count their tours this way. You just need to pay attention and know what you are getting.

Yes, Chris, I think it can be misleading. OAT does that too and I find it annoying. Day 1 should be when you meet your tour leader. On the other hand, OAT quotes their prices with airfare included unless you opt out, so when that’s the case, it’s not exactly unfair to count that as Day 1. But it’s inconsistent if you don’t use their air, or if even if you do and you come early.

With ALL tour information, though, it’s incumbent on the traveler to read and understand every bit of it, so no one should be surprised if Day 1 isn’t really Day 1.

Almost all RS tours use hotels with elevators and AC. It is a misconception that they don’t.

The Gate 1 Essentials tour does sound like the RS My Way tour format.

I have a question for those who use the airfare that can be added to a tour. When day two is the first day you arrive in a European location, aren’t you pretty jetlagged and how do you even take in what is being shown to you? That has always stopped me from wanting to add the company’s airfare offer to a tour.

luv2travel, getting flights through a tour company doesn't necessarily preclude coming in early, though it probably depends on the company. Some of them will reserve your extra nights at the first hotel for you. (Though you may actually get a better price reserving them yourself. In my experience, I've been able to keep the same room vs checking out and checking back in; YMMV.)

2 examples from my travels:

1) We came in to Amsterdam 2 days early for a river cruise with Tauck, and booked air through them. Tauck would have reserved the extra nights for us, but we opted to stay at a less expensive hotel. However, Tauck still provided our transfer from the airport. (I should note that Tauck is more expensive than most tour providers.)

2) We arrived early for a Sicily tour with Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT). They normally offer to book extra days for you and we were going to do that, but then they sent an email saying they were unable to (no reason given). But we had no trouble booking the extra nights at the same hotel (same room) and saved money. However, even though we purchased air through them, OAT would not provide our airport transfer because we were coming in early.

So the policies vary, but unless you are participating in a group tour that travels from the US (or Canada, or wherever) as a group, I suspect with most companies you can book air through them and arrive early.
