Tour Recommendations

Rick Steve's does not have tours to asia or africa. Can anyone from the wonderful Rick Steve's community recommend tour groups or tours to places in Asia or Africa?

Kerr, Downey & Selby was THE big name safari company when we lived in Nairobi in the late 60's. I did a search and it looks like it's now Kerr & Downey. Have no idea of the cost but if I were seriously looking, I'd check them out first.

We have friends who have traveled with lionworldtours.com out of Toronto on two occasions. They have recommended them to us with high marks. Bon voyage. Joe

Check: Tauck Tours, www.tauck.com for Africa and Asia. Good company. Check Odessey Tours for China (haven't used them, but they do the Penn State Alum trips....friend going on one this spring) Abercrombie and Kent, and National Geographic (haven't traveled with them, but several friends have and had great experiences with both). Also Silversea does cruises in and around both (with typical shore excursions) but you may be looking for a more in-depth land adventure. I'd suggest looking at the web sites of any of the major universities in your area and see if they offer alum tours (and see what vendors they use), most often accompanied by one of the university professors, which adds extra insight. Universities often let others (not alums) join their groups, too.

Richard, I remembered the new name for this group and found their web site: www.roadscholar.org They offer tours to Africa, Asia, etc. Road Scholar is the renamed ElderHostel program. It was renamed to appeal to and expand their market to aging boomers. You may be 28 years old, in which case this would NOT be a good match for you. But, if you are 50 or above, it might. I haven't traveled with them, but several people I know had wonderful experiences with them when they were still under the previous name. There was a big article in The Wall Street Journal (or similar) a few years ago when they rebranded, and I recall reading they generally pull a pretty active, bright group of travelers.......but
not 28 year olds (for obvious reasons). If I were to consider travel with them, I'd ask lots of questions about their typical demographics now.

Oh Ed, THANK YOU for pointing that out. And, I feel sorry for Richard who is now getting all these replies. Sorry Richard. Ed, I'll start paying more attention to original dates when I post a reply. Makes me wonder how posts this old get resurrected....odd. Still a good question.............just a few years ago....ugh.

No big deal. Richard's probably dead by now. If memory serves, at about that time the Hans were struting around China, Kyoto was the capital of Japan, and the Israelis were thinking about dropping in to Entebbe for a few hours.

Richard's not dead and the question is still relevant. I'm always interested in the names of recommended tour companies.

Richard, Now that we've resurrected this post, you might also have a look at Trafalgar Tours, Globus Tours or GAdventures (formerly GAP). Happy travels!

Good information is good to get. Note that the person who dug up the zombie has never posted here before, at least not under that name, and pops up with an answer out of the blue to a topic which, with the greatest of respect to the OP, is not in the main stream of questions to a Europe helpline.
