We're headed to Rome in July and have limited time and budget. I would like to use a tour guide for the Vatican and then also for the Catacombs (San Callisto). That said, I prefer not to have a large group of 20+, but also don't want to pay for a true private. Semi-private sounds ideal (6-12 folks). I'm thinking $100 a person for Vatican seems realistic and hopefully less for the catacombs. Any suggestions on realistic price & tour guides? Also any suggestion on how to get to those locations (taxi, bus, tour guide, etc...) given I'm told the best time for the vatican tour is at 7:30am. Thanks in advance!
http://www.walksofitaly.com/ does a nice Pristine Sistine tour first thing in the AM. Group of 12, 84 euros per person. We walked to the museum entrance from P Navona, about 25 minutes.
We did 3 tours with Presto Tours in Rome. They have smaller groups (up to 15). At no time did we have more than 10 people. In fact for the evening walking tour there was only 4 of us. I would highly recommend them.
Thank you both! They both look great and they both have high ratings on TripAdvisor. I'm not sure if Rick Steve's rates tour companies or not as I haven't found that section if he does. That said, the Presto sounds ideal given it's 56 euro and includes the admission making it about 1/2 the cost of most all the others I've looked up and it still has a max of 15 folks www.prestotours.com. Thanks! - Eric
