In reading the "How many countries have you been to?" thread, I see lots of people return to countries and some don't. So if you had to pick one country, whether you have only been there once or multiple times, you would like to see again, which would it be? I would like to return to Spain. I've only been there once and enjoyed the heck out of myself. We mostly saw a triangle which included Madrid, Granada and Sevilla with lots of day trips etc. But I have not visited Barcelona or the northern parts of Spain and would love to see them. Anyone else?
OK, I'll play... but you're asking something very hard to do. It's a difficult toss up between three of my faves, but I'd say Turkey. The one country that I will not go back to is Israel. My visit was brief, but most unpleasant. In all of my travels, I did not ever run into so much hassle, harassment and intimidation (by the authorities)... even though I arrived legally, with the proper documents, and having taken the care of procuring a special passport issued by the Canadian government (for the express purpose of visiting Israel). It's the only time that I actually cancelled a whole planned itinerary on arrival. After having traveled the world as extensively as I have, I have learned a thing or two about respect and behaving properly and responsibly when I am abroad. So I can categorically say that my experience in Israel was most uncommon. I would gladly return to any other of the countries that I have already visited.
Turkey.
All of them, really. But I'd pick Greece because I only went in high school and wasn't ready to appreciate lots of things about it. Although the idea of never seeing Paris again is depressing.
What country, that you've already visited, would you like to return? All of them except Macedonia and Serbia.
I can't get enough of France!!
I don't think I can limit it to one. I'd go the the UK any time! I HAVE to get back to Austrailia and Hong Kong. I really enjoyed Norway and would go back again. Austria is also a country I'd visit anytime. If I was forced- I guess the UK- it 'calls to me' somehow!
No question.... picking just one is the hard part! That kind of makes the question interesting. Of course the flip side, which one would you never want to see again, could also be telling.
I would have to say I would revisit Italy as often as I could. I have been to other countries multiple times, but Italy is the most diverse for me, plus I can't get enough of the food and the language. I could definitely never ever return to Mexico again. If we are speaking of European countries only, I would have to say I would return to all of them again. The outcome of a trip often depends on who you are traveling with, how long you are there, what the weather is like, where you stayed, etc. If I've had a less than ideal time (like the time my mother was violently ill in Spain) I don't hold it against the country, I always promise to give it a second or third chance (which I've done with Mexico and it lost).
France (especially rural, southern France) is my easy answer. But I'll likely get back there soon. A country I would like to return to that I may not get a chance to any time soon, would be Finland. The country I would like to return to the least would be Liechtenstien - an absolutely nothing place.
I want to go back to Italy. It's been 11 years since I was there and I miss it more than I thought I would.
So far everywhere I've been. But Italy and Wales are the ones I've most often chosen to return to. Florence, Sienna, The Lake District in England, and the Welsh coast are the places that have drawn us the most. I may have to add Paris to the list soon.
No.Can.Do. They'll ALL my babies!!! We're having soooo much trouble trying to eliminate entire countries for our next trip :-(
Philippines, and we are going to return, just like MacArthur.
We are returning to Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Czech Republic next spring. Sorry to hear about your experience in Israel. My trip was most pleasant, food was GREAT and the people were very helpful and nice. We did not have any unpleasant experience there. Got to realize they have rockets being lobbed into their country continually. We would definately return to Israel.
No contest. Germany. Specifically, Berlin.
Turkey gets my vote!
I would return to any I have been to so far, but I have been to Germany 4 times and look forward to going again.
I can't get enough of the UK.
Been to most of Western Europe except for Germany/Benelux. However, have been to Ireland 3 times since 2006, and not a day goes by what I think about going back. Will be visiting Scotland for the first time in Mid Oct and the 2nd week will be spent in NW Ireland and mostly in Northern Ireland. Still haven' gotten enough of the Republic of Ireland, and figure there will be more return trips there. I want to take our sons as well as our Grandaughter, since she is the 7th generation out of Ireland. Our family left during the great famine. Was in Italy and several Med. countries in the 70's and Ital is on my short list! Also about 1/2 of our relatives are of German descent so will need to get there at least once. So many places to go....so little time (& $'s)
France. My absolute favorite.
Seriously I would return to any place I have been...some with more enthusiasm than others, but I cannot think of a place I would not ever want to return to. I do, however always try to add at least one new place on each trip, but that doesn't always work out. Most re-visited and much loved locations.... Cotswolds, southern Germany, southern France, Italy.
For those of you who read the question and found it hard (or couldn't) play: thanks for trying. It was hard for me too. Spain won by a hair! Can't think of anyplace I went where I wouldn't return..... some are just further down the list than others.
Oh, this is easy; Scotland, hands down. I live the history, the people, the music, the whisky, the seafood, the books, the scenery, the dancing.... Pam
Portugal! and of course Italy! I think Italy "won" the repeat vacation for next year since every place we will visit is different than the last trip. If we went back to Portugal we'd hit some repeats. And new adventures/experiences seem to outweigh the great places already seen. Or maybe we are afraid that round 2 will not be as awesome as round 1?
Two countries I always have to go back...France and Germany, and like a pilgrimage to three places: Paris, Berlin, Potsdam. Vienna is catching up as the fourth gotta-get-back-to city. For Berlin and Paris it has been multiple times, Potsdam and Vienna several times...never tired of going back again and again.
I think it would be the UK and London, as I only got to spend a 3 day weekend there, about 24 years ago. Would love to spend a whole lot of time exploring the War Museum, and the other historical museums.
For me, it's SW Ireland. It's cool, hilly and has lots of water. Maybe living close to Houston has something to do with my choice! Anyway, I've been several times and will go again next year. This year, Italy and southern Germany. (I've been there before, too)
Ireland's probably the top of my list - after I see everywhere once (I'm sure I'll visit before that). My wife really wants to go back to Australia.
It's such a hard call. I always have that debate with my husband about whether we want to revisit favourites or try new places. Certainly France, Austria and Italy are tops of my list to revisit. I have little interest in revisiting Czech Republic. That opinion is always controversial. I found Prague way overcrowded (and I've been to Rome in July) and the other tourists were unpleasant. Too many drunken stag parties roaming around yelling filth at people. Maybe one day I'll give it another chance, but if so I'll make sure I'm there off-season.
If I had to pick one, I'd pick Italy, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, France and Belize. Oops, that's six. Where would I not want to return? Albania, Morocco, Spain and Aruba.
I don't think I've ever been anywhere in Europe I wouldn't want to return. However, if I had to choose I would return to Italy again and again. I just went to Hungary in June and I loved that, too.....so, I guess it would have to be on my top three list. Which means I have to name a 3rd and I guess that would be France.
Such a hard question. I'm the type that always falls in love with the last place I've been. As much as I want to see new countries, I can't resist returning to places I've already been to. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Spain. Seville really made an impression in my brain. Honorable mention is Morocco and UK.
I'd have to say Greece. I was really hooked on Italy, but then I went to Greece... Peloponnese, mainland, islands - doesn't matter where. Been there multiple times already and can't get enough.
Interesting read. Usually when I tell people how much I liked UK and Ireland they think I've lost it. Good to know I'm not alone.
Well I would go back to all of mine, except Jamaica . My faves would be France, Spain, Greece, Switzerland UK, and Italy, in that order.
Hong Kong, without a doubt. In Europe, probably Portugal.
Fascinating question Ray! At this moment, picking only one, I'd say Sicily. Our vacation there last summer was cut short, and there's still so much more to see we'd barely scratched the surface! (and I keep thinking about those coffee granite con panna and a brioche for breakfast, yum yum yum). But i also have this romantic notion of going to one of theEstonian islands in summertime, or somewhere in a cabin in Finland . . . And still have never made it to the Dordogne here . . . And . . . .and . . . .
I like the question, because, like mine, it's a reminder of all the great experiences we've had over the years. But, it's like asking if you had to pick only one food to eat, what would it be. Actually, I've worked that one out. Like pretty much everyone else (so far) I can think of a couple of places I would not return to: Cyprus, where I broke 2 bones at the hotel's folk dance evening and could not get out of the hotel (wet plaster cast from knee to toe) when the fire broke out the next night and the local travel agent refused to rebook me for an earlier flight and I was stuck in the hotel for another 4 days. I also don't expect to return to Beijing, though I thoroughly enjoyed my trip there and recommend it. Though I've been to the UK many times, I've never gotten farther north than London. I want to see all of France, not just Paris (my favorite), I want to go back to everywhere in Italy plus all the places I haven't seen yet. I want to see more of Austria and Hungary. I want to return to Thailand and Australia and New Zealand. Sigh, there's hardly anywhere I felt I saw all I wanted to.
I'm a "returner" by nature - when I find someplace I really like, I go back. I just got back from my second trip to Vienna and want to start planning my third. Have been to Berlin and Paris multiple times and plan on going back soon. Countries are so large that I don't think there's any country I've been do that I wouldn't want to return to, because there's so much left to see that I haven't. But almost every city I've been to I also would happily return to, although like some said, some with more enthusiasm than others. Berlin, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, and Marsielle/Aix-en-Provence/Cassis (I list those together since they're so close) are all places I am actively dying to return to. I really enjoyed Budapest, Salzburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and Nancy but they are a little lower down in terms of priority.
Germany without a doubt. I fell in love with Germany, especially southern Bavaira. I could easily find myself living there.
I fell in love with Scotland! I'm returning next year with my husband and can't wait... he's never been :)
Whenever I return from a trip I tell my friends "it was wonderful, I'd love to go back there" and they just laugh - because I say that everytime. In actuality there are 3 places I've been that I would go back to in an instant if the opportunity presented itself. 1. New Zealand (hands down winner) 2. Sweden
3. Greece My problem is that there are so many places I haven't been that I want to go to that it's not that likely that I'll get back to any of these places. However, the desire to return is always there.
In ten years of yearly monthly summer trip thru Europe I have stayed in almost every country (not Greece yet) and if I got only one pick it would be Turkey.
Tough one to answer but we finally decided on Ireland. Many others came very close.
Iceland, Mongolia, and Japan.
Yet one does choose.... as far as I know, nobody eats the whole shop!
Depends on how long I was locked in the patisserie:)
Great thread. As others have noted, tough question. Of the places I have visited, my favorites are London, Salzburg and Venice with an ideal vacation being Salzburg and Bavaria, then Venice and Veneto, and then Lake Como, which I have never visited before. But to play the game, I will say Italy because of its natural beauty, Mediterranean culture and climate, and most of all diversity. Before going to Italy, I had some reservations because I know no Italian and have never had a strong interest in ancient history and art. But Italy offers so much. Venice and the Amalfi coast are absurdly breathtaking, Tuscany is a delight, and please note that I have not even mentioned Florence (which I have never visited) or Rome (which is not a personal favorite). And because of this thread, I am really looking forward to my next European trip, which will be a visit to Spain.
Trying to answer this is like being locked up in a Parisian pattisserie !! How could one choose?
hypothetically, i would go back to vienna. i was surprised at how much i loved it there. in reality though, im on a mission to visit more and more countries so any return trip would not be happening until i get a little more world travely (yes, i made up the word "travely")
