Tirana, Albania from Montenegro

Does anyone have experience driving from Kotor, Montenegro to Tirana, Albania? I'm visiting Kotor in September and would like to spend a couple days in Albania -- because, well, it's Albania!!! Interested in info on border crossing, ease of parking in Tirana, other places in Albania I should consider seeing, whether car rental companies permit this (I'm renting in Dubrovnik). I don't see much info on car rental websites, and haven't had time to call each company.

Hi Lisa --
I did that trip by bus once, and it WAS an experience! I'm not sure about driving, but I would suggest that you also post your question on the Lonely Planet Thorn Tree website. I got a lot of help there for my trip.

There is at least this one bus running, which may be the easier answer. Many car rental companies may not permit this particular border crossing - I had trouble in the past in this region, though I was trying to find a car to cross borders from either Bulgaria, Macedonia, or Greece, not from Montenegro. You probably already know that there are no cross-border trains.

The easiest way to research the car situation is probably to contact the three major consolidators who work with multiple European rental agencies: AutoEurope, Kemwel, and Gemut.

Please report on this experience when you return; Albania is in my future, I hope.
