What's the customary amount to tip a private driver in Rome and Athens? Thanks. Jim
A private driver.. working for a company or working for himself? If working for himself why would you tip?
If working for a company I would tip about 5 euros for an airport run.. have no idea what one would tip if simply using a driver for a day.
It's a driver working for a company; no different than a cab driver or a hired car to the airport. In the US, 15% is customary. That's why I'm asking. thanks
Jim, this article from Conde Nast Traveler may be helpful to you.

It doesn't specifically address private drivers for Italy, but it does for Greece (based on a full day).
You'll have to scroll down to Europe in the listing.
We've only arranged a private driver in Ireland (who worked for himself), and he was so very touched when we added a kind gratuity (but he was an incredible dear who really made our trip, and he was with us for several days).
