Tip: Research whether your future flights are currently flying

I've posted this under specific topics, but thought I'd repeat and share here.

After we were just canceled by British Airways, my husband found a site which tracks past airlines' flights. He found Flight Aware, but I'm sure there are others. If the info he found is correct, the flights we were sold haven't flown since March, 2020. In fact, if the info is correct, British Airways hasn't flown any thing into/out of San Diego since then.

Our outbound flights were just canceled [and rebooked with partner American]; waiting for the return flights to be canceled.

The fates are making international trip harder, but like many of you, we are determined to travel.

Good luck to all!

Pat if you can get in and out of LAX there are a few flying BA/AA every day. We switched to this on the way back.

cchaplin,
thx, but we have found that driving back from LA after traveling about 20 hrs is just plain painful. LA traffic has returned, and it can take 3-4 hrs in traffic for a 2-hr trip. I actually offered to cover our expenses to fly out of SFO, but BA refused since it's outside of their 300 mile rule for changes.
Thx for trying!

I think I'm missing something .... weren't most if not all flights cancelled from the US to Europe/Great Britain in March 2022 when borders were closed for non-essential travel? So how is this helpful information?

Donna, I think the point is that that particular route has not started back up again. So, if Pat had looked up that particular flight and saw that it had been flying as scheduled for the last 2 months, that would be a good indication that her flight would not get cancelled. But the fact that flight has not started back up, means, as Pat predicts, her flight will likely soon be cancelled.

FlightAware is not that accurate and some flights have changed flight numbers. Even if your flight hasn't flow in over a year, that doesn't mean it wasn't planned to fly again. The airlines had it planned but canceled when they realized it would be unprofitable with few passengers.

You could always fly in and out of Los Angeles and then catch a commuter flight between SAN and LAX.

Flights continued between the USA and GB during the pandemic. Few passengers, lots of cargo.

you can also check the actual airport's site, they have arrival and departure info too.

Frank,
years ago we tried flying in/out of San Diego to catch longer flights at LAX, and found the flights erratic and not dependable. You query intrigued me, so I looked at Google Flights are found very few non-stop flights are available. And yes, I said non-stop, as they were actually offering one-stop flights for the 45 min trip.

SAN-LAX is a strange distance to fly, so not much of a market; the drive is frustrating and stress-inducing with the traffic. I've sat in bumper-bumper traffic at 1:00am on a LA freeway. There is no pattern, nor any true way to avoid traffic. I actually did the LAX drive ONCE in under 90 minutes, during the day, [to my surprise,] then had to kill a few hours, because I was so early!

Thx for the reply.

A few months ago, I bought a Delta ticket to Frankfurt for August and a Lufthansa ticket to Sarajevo for September. My strategy was to look at what itineraries were available one week into the future; then I picked one of those itineraries for my trip in 3-4 months. No changes so far on the Delta itinerary. Only minor time changes on the Lufthansa itinerary.

Pat,

We actually live 20 minutes from LAX and once flew to London out of San Diego! I can attest - the drive in this direction is no picnic.

This year we, too, had our BA flight canceled and replaced by an AA flight.

And we gave up on vacationing in England after four tries. So we booked a connecting RT trip to Paris. We take off on Saturday. Fingers crossed.
