We are undecided between about 12 European
Itineraries, combing 2 different cities or countries.
Due to budget, in most of the cases coming from EWR or JFK to Europe, if we don't fly direct, we save between 350 to 500 for the 2 of us.
That leads me to my question.
Most of the layovers would be in KEF or LIS.
Many of them, especially through KEF,only have layover time of 50 minutes to 75 minutes.
As someone, not very experienced with European travel, what happens if first flight is delayed, even an hour
Pardon an old man's ignorance
Thank you
Keflavik is no problem for short connections.
If your flight is delayed, the airline is responsible for getting you to your final destination. It there isn’t a same day flight, that could be the next day or later.
If it's all on one ticket, you will be put on the next available flight. That's available and not necessarily the next flight. That might not be until the next day.
Icelandair are experts at the fast connection. They have even been known to hold a plane for connecting passengers.
If you are connecting to a Schengen country you will have to go through immigration at KEF.
Frnk, sorry if I was not clear.
I was talking about us making the flight.
We are in our 70s
I would opt for the KEF layover. They are so used to this and have the system down pat. The airport is very small, so it isn't like you are trekking around at CDG, AMS etc. Super easy!
Have done that quick layover in Iceland many times. It is why I fly Iceland Air from Frankfurt to the West Coast. The flight is quick and the layover is efficient.
If you have one ticket all the way to your destination and you miss a connection, then the airline will put you on the next flight. Sounds good, but can be pretty inconvenient.
I come from a city where there are no direct flights so every trip is a change of planes. its not the end of the world. But do give yourself enough time. 75 minutes is tight, 50 minutes is generally not worth the savings for me as the stress would reduce the enjoyment of the trip too much. 90 minutes to 3 hours is the window I look for.
I see you are on a budget and I saw that come thru on your other question on hotels. The first most important thing you can do is choose a location that interests you and is know to be less expensive. Of course this is really all about why you are traveling. if it is to fulfill a lifelong dream to go to Paris .... then Paris it is. If its a get away to see something new, then the options are greater.
For your flights, go to goodle flights and put in your information for departure and arrival and then there iis a matrix you can open that shows you the cost of the trip on various days of departure and arrival within a week or so of the dates you put in. This can save hundreds by moveinig departure or arrival by one or two days.
Once you have a good idea of your trip, post it on the forum. Ask for cost savings ideas. You might be surprised what you get.
If you have one ticket all the way to your destination and you miss a connection, then the airline will put you on the next flight.
Not exactly. They will put you on the next AVAILABLE flight. If the next flight is sold out, they aren't going to bump someone from that flight to put you on board.
But, if you are delayed due to no fault of your own, you may be entitled to compensation.
