Tim Russert's sudden death today

It was so sad and shocking to learn of the sudden death today of this great man. Interestingly, he had only flown back to Washington last night from Rome and went back to work this morning.

In all deep respect, I wonder if he had suffered from deep vein thrombosis? He died from a massive heart attack in case you haven't heard.

And please do not refer to people who have died as having "passed"....when I hear this terrible expression, I always want to say "passed what". The traditional expression to use is "passed away" or "died".

I wondered about a clot also...when I fly more than an hour, I always get up and walk around (as much as you can in a plane) for 5 min. every hour. I am constantly amazed at how few people do this. Most sit glued to their seats. I would end up looking like a pretzle.

Tim was one of the great journalists of today. So many are 'Hollywood', but he was not a bit of that.
He will be missed.

Referring to a deceased person as having "passed" is a cultural difference. It may bother you, or sound unfamiliar, but people who use that expression were probably raised in an environment where it was used. That doesn't make it wrong -- it's just different. There are many "traditional expressions" that might not be something that you would prefer to use or hear, but everyone has the same right to express themselves in a way that is culturally appropriate for them. That's part of what we learn when we travel -- our way might be the right way for us, but it's not the only way.

I would highly doubt it was DVT. Somehow I doubt someone who made as much as he did would be traveling in coach. Very sad though.

I am always sorry when anyone dies, and so young really, but , he did not look healthy to me ,I always thought he looked a little "puffy" .
A little extra weight, and a lifestyle that was likely high stress( apparently he was a workholic) , not enough good food, rest and excercise.
I bet he was just getting worn out.
I am so sorry for his family to have lost their husband, father, and son.. as I said, too young.

I found this on line about the cause of Death. It had nothing to do with flying. This is very sad.

TIM RUSSERT's personal physician, DR. MICHAEL A. NEWMAN, announced on MSNBC Friday night that an autopsy had been conducted and it was determined that the affable 58-year-old journalist had passed away due a heart attack resulting from asymptomatic coronary artery disease

The doctor said that Russert's heart had been enlarged, and "fresh clots" were found in the coronary artery. Newman said that medical professionals were not able to resuscitate Russert following his collapse.

There seems to be an underlying concern here in this topic thread--understandably so--about DVT. This has been frequently discussed here and the best advice ever given was:If you think you have risk factors for DVT (age is one but only one) and you have an upcoming long haul trip, get the professional and expert advice that only your physician can give. There are things that she/he can prescribe or advise that will minimize the risk and help you more accurately assess your risk.
