Ticket to Ride UK Maps--helping all learn European Geography

All you UK train riders who love board games will be happy to hear that there is a new map for Days of Wonder's Ticket to Ride series. I love this game. I first bought Ticket to Ride Europe for my brother-in-law and sister and they had soon figured out a way to play it with their 4 year-old train fanatic son. (No destination cards for the under six.) James is determined to get to Europe and the UK in particular and not just for the trains. :) My sister's family now has a lot of the maps. James claims that he's learned Russian geography from the Asia map. I'm not sure how much they've played with Africa, but the Netherlands map gets used and Switzerland is a favorite! We want to get the German and Scandinavian maps too. My niece loved the iPad version as she didn't have to search so hard to find the cities.

Have others found this an enjoyable way to introduce children to Europe? Are their other games that you've played that help build understanding and enthusiasm for travel?

There was another world travel game that we played when I was a kid. It involved reaching specific destinations and you got a product card which gave you points when you arrived. There was a plastic grid that covered 25% of the map and it would move whenever "bad weather" was declared and your playing piece would move with it. So you could be a space from Paris, only to find your self near Cape Town on the next round. :)

Found the World Wide Travel game.

I love Ticket to Ride. It's a very well-designed game, easy to play, and is great for geography/travel buffs.

My generation was weaned on the "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?" computer games and spin-offs. Those games helped fuel my interest in geography, and that led to a love of travel later on. It was fun to find clues and "travel" around the world trying to catch Carmen. I don't know if that series has continued on into the current era or not.
