Three days in Transylvania?

Is it worth visiting Transylvania? $999. Plus $140 for Dracula’s Castle and $140 for a fortified church and concert tour. Only Brasov. 3 nights. What else could we do or see on our own?

I would need a lot more detail to be definitive. For instance I would say yes with a guide i know. Maybe to maybe not with another i know. Absolutely worth it if you enjoy it. Its all subjective.

We really enjoyed our visit to Transylvania, and we spent three days there. I'm not sure where you are getting these prices from- the standard entry fee for Bran Castle appears to be about £10. We stayed in Brasov, which is a very nice town. We hired a driver who took us to Rasnov (fort up on a hill with wonderful views), Bran Castle (the "Dracula castle"), and Peles Castle in Sinaia (a more modern castle). We also spent half a day in Bucharest to tour the Palace of the Parliament which was fascinating, and highly recommended if you have the time. It's easy to get the train between Brasov and Bucharest.

First, it’s a gorgeous area and Brasov is a nice town. But worth it is so subjective and I am not sure what your price includes and where you are coming from, etc.

You could spend a full day in Brasov. It sounds as though you are looking at day tours for the rest. I would choose Peles and Pelisor Castles over Bran Castle if you need to choose. And you don’t need a tour for that - just reserve a ticket well ahead and take the train. The fortified churches in the area are interesting so that is worthwhile, especially if you can see two of them.

Three days is really short unless you are already in Romania. And if you are, I’m not sure what the $999 is paying for. If you are looking at adding this on to the Dolomites, you can fly round trip to Brasov from Milan for under $100 (not including checked bags, etc.) on Wizz Air.

I loved Romania, including Brasov, but $999 per person seems like a high price unless you are flying from the U.S. - and then 3 days is so short.

$999 for what? 3 nights hotel could easily be $600 to $750. The rest i cant guess. If it were the guy I know, its worth it what ever it is ... cause his trips are complete and well done. So its all a guess.

I was describing a post trip after a long river cruise. 3 nights hotels. I agree with others that the castle tours seem awfully high. Will have to investigate further. Thanks.

Private post river trip from Bucharest to Brasov anf Brahn castle and back to Bucharest?

3, 4 or 5 star hotels? Nothing else but a hotel for $900?

Well, I would absolutely opt for 3 days in Brasov after a cruise, but I don’t think I would pay $999 (twice) for it - especially if it doesn’t include the daily tours. But that’s just me. With 2 of you, that’s $2000 for transportation and lodging. The day tours themselves are probably close to going rate (I did a full day small group tour to Bran Castle and the Bear Sanctuary last fall for @ $89 + $20 sanctuary entrance. Your price is only @ $60/each more. I do see private tours on Viator for slightly under $120/each.

I looked at booking dot com for 3 nights for 2 people for next June, filtered for hotel, included breakfast, and less than 1/2 mile from old town - and the Radisson Blu showed at $900 for 3 nights. Everything else was $300-$350 for 3 nights. The 2 1/2 hr train Bucharest to Brasov cost $21 in first class.

I think it comes down to ease versus cost. Basically it’s not hard to do all of it on your own. But, as Mr. É said, you could invest in a driver/guide for a day or two and it would probably be worth it.

Generally I find for my intelligence and research sills and recall abilities that a guide add a lof of value to my trips. For the trip in question I have done it .... twice actually .... the guides were will worth the investment for what interests me when traveling.

But the question of is the $999 and the $140 worth it, that still up in the air on my count. $140 for a guide for a day is on the low side of reasonable. If the $999 gets you from Bucharest to Brasov and pays for 3 nights and then gets you back to Bucharest for your onward flight, yea, maybe on the highside of about fair. Could you do it cheaper? Sure. Whould you know what you are looking at? Maybe not.

To clarify, the $999 is transportation, guided small group, meals, hotels. $140 for tour of castle—per person. Guided. Coach Bucharest to Brazov and back. . City tour, more. Think we would skip Bram Castle trip, maybe do church one. Pelee included. (Excuse misspellings!). Likely would not do it on our own. Sorry we cannot get to the Northwest region—sounds charming.

Thanks for all the tips.

We stayed in a hostel in Brasov. It was very cheap, but that's what we like on our trips - we spend little on hotels, more on restaurants. Enjoyed Brasov - did the "free tour". Romania is not an expensive part of Europe. If you plan ahead, you can do much cheaper. 3 nights for $999? Wow. Astonishing. The tours are ridiculous too.

Ah, you are describing the package put together by the cruise. These are 3-4x what you can do on your own. Just use booking for Brasov, and then go to Brasov. Probably $200-$300.
