This will be a nice change....

This will be a welcome improvement in air travel - https://www.bbc.com/news/business-49447200 .

Not having to worry about the limits of 3-1-1 bags will make it much easier for carry-on only travellers, and not having to remove laptops should streamline the whole process. Hopefully these will be coming to an airport near me in the very near future!

The scanners may be adopted in other countries, but some countries may still balk at eliminating the liquid quantity restrictions (but allowing the liquids to stay in the bag instead of pulling it out for visual inspection). Particularly thinking of US security, which seems more paranoid than some others.

Ken, I sure would love to see this! We have TSA Pre-check that really helps on domestic departures.

Does that mean no more restriction at all on liquids or same amounts, just not as much hassle?

I probably shouldn't tell you this, so don't spread it around, but here in Israel, where security is paramount, there are no liquid restrictions and never have been. I routinely take bottled drinks from home for my wait in the airport and for the flight as well. It's possible that flights to the US enforce the 3-1-1 rule at the gate, dunno, I never fly non-stop to the US.

Did nobody notice this equipment will not be in place in Britain until 2022 ? We don't need to settle this today.

In the meantime, off with the shoes, temporarily take off the belt (which a desperate, cruel person could use as a noose in a pinch) and have your Ziploc bag ready for inspection.

They are (or were) a bit more lenient on liquids over 100ml at Gatwick back in '14 when my mom was with us. Somehow she managed to put her large size shampoo or lotion or shower gel in her carry on. (She had been staying with my sister before we gathered her up, so she just didn't pack properly). They took it out and put it in one of their liquid scanner machine thingys (yes, that's the technical name...lol) and gave her the all clear. Put it back in her bag - didn't make her discard it. Maybe if she'd had a 3 or 4 large items it would have been an issue.

You never know what will cause a second look at airport security. Here are some of the items I've been questioned about and the airport:

1/2 ounce bottle of hand sanitizer (Guernsey)

Mini roll of duct tape (Gatwick)

Immersion heater (JFK )

Solid deodorant ( Berlin)

There were also stops at Heathrow, London City and others but I don't remember why. The top three I listed included bomb swipes and rerunning through the X-ray machine. All three also requested a supervisor because they didn't know what they were.

We have never paid for Pre TSA. We mostly likely have it on boarding pass. Why? I do not know. We have had screening place us in the line when we did not have Pre TSA (SEA). Why? I do not know.

Yes, we have had a very small pocket knife tossed (SFO) after several trips. Oh, is that where it has been? Water (JFK). Request a plastic belt be removed.

I agree with changing technology if it improves security and decreases excess time at an airport.

I thought the SSSS code was at least partially done by random the selection. slwolf, sometimes TSA Pre is provided to you by the airline if you're a frequent flyer. For some time, TSA was providing it to airlines for select people as a promotion to get more people interested in it.

There are things that cause a second look, then things they totally miss...like a couchsurfer who had a bottle of liquid stain remover in her purse, or my mom (again!) who apparently flew at least 3 times with her jar of face moisturizing cream in her purse. I guess the moral of the story is carry your creams in your handbag. ;)

Just heard on the news that the new scanners are now in use at DIA, which should make the process go quicker. I usually get TSA Pre-check, which I like mainly so I don't have to take off my shoes. It is also helpful when I travel with my laptop and kindle.

"They" say that getting hit with the SSSS is totally at random...who knows?

I know a woman friend of mine is almost always hit with the SSSS, I've never ever gotten it, and and I'm betting on not getting it either

The last time flying domestic (it was to Boston) surprisingly I got the TSA Pre-Screen, don't know that happened, certainly did not (and would not) pay for it.

For some reason, I often seem to be tagged with the dreaded "SSSS" on my boarding card at the local airport. I've asked about that and they always say, "it's just random" or "it's for training purposes" but it seems to happen on many trips so I have to assume it's more than just "random". My camera bag and carry-on (both soft sided luggage) usually get swabbed.

hey hey
didn't know what the SSSS meant, had to look it up. since never been "hit" with it on boarding pass. few years had TSA precheck stamped on pass, how who knows, i never applied or paid for it.
traveling in couple weeks so will be on the "look" for it.

@ken: you're so special with your "younger" look from great family genes!, traveling from a "high risk" country, you're on the "SSSS" patrol list, most of all could be that Ken and Barbie are traveling today LOL
