Thinking about extending Europe Trip 10 days but is it reasonable?

I'm leaving with some friends for Rome at the end of September. We're staying for a little under 30 days. Our plans are to spend about a week in Rome and then head over to Greece for the rest of the time. From there we'll fly from Athens to Rome and then home.

I've already got the ticket and made almost all of my pre-trip purchases. I found I had about $6,000 left, which is quite over what I expected to have. My flight back to the states connects in the Netherlands and now I'm thinking I should not complete the rest of my return flight and head over to England for about 10 days and then get a one way flight from London back home for about $300 with taxes.

This is my first time in Europe and I'm really unsure about money. I just know I wanted $4K and ended up with $6K. Do you think I'll be okay with this unexpected UK side-trip? I realize England is very expensive and I don't want to be stressed money wise in Italy and Greece. I'm a student and will be staying in $40-$50 a night hostels (or so it seems) and eating cheaply. But I also want money to be able to actually do and see things while I'm there.

Part of me thinks I should just forget about it, but since I'm already in Europe and I've always wanted to see England, I think I should probably just go for it. Thoughts?

Thank you so much.

I think you have plenty of money to do it. As always your budget depends on your travel style and preferences.

I eat and sleep cheap by buying food at grocery stores and sleeping in hostels or other budget accomodations. The money I save is spent on entertainment (I consider admission to a museum entertainment too so it's a broad category).

England is considered expensive by many but it's possible to travel on a budget there too. London's museums, some of the best in the world, are free so that helps.

AK, Go for it! who knows when, or sadly if you will have the opportunity again. It sounds like you have the time and the funds - I stop myself too many times and then have the regrets. Stay and have fun!

I'm wondering if my young German student will ever come home from Europe .... he left in March and is now almost 3 months beyond his original home coming day. And he's still not run out of money. It's getting closer though because he's now into hitchhiking to save money.

But with $2K extra you will have a great time in the UK for sure. Go for it!

Dear AK:
I agree with everybody: Go for it! Make those lifetime memories. What if you do not have the time or opportunity to travel so extensively again? You sound sensible and careful. Have fun and good luck!

DO IT!!

I just got back from a 5 week trip and wish i had another 5 weeks. If your going to be in Rome, you should think about stopping in croatia, you can actually sail the islands for pretty cheap and i hear its absolutely incredible. have fun.

Hummm good question. On one hand you are a college student and that means that you have many many years of travel in your future. You don't have to cram it all in one trip. I've lived in Italy for nearly 7 years, and I've had to tell myself time after time that I can come back. I've seen a lot but not everything that I want to see.

But if you have your heart set on England and you're not going to end your trip with an empty bank account, then why not?

Absolutely, definitely, go for it! The only regrets I have in life are for the things I didn't do.

Before you decide- Can I suggest you make sure you can get a one way ticket to Arizona from London for that price? It looks very low to me.

Maggie is right - that's very low. I just did a quick search on Expedia for a one way between London and Phoenix, midweek, and they ranged between $1008 and $1245.

Absolutely with everyone( most everyone) here,, do it!! You will not regret the trips you take, its the trips you don't take you may regret. You can always go back,, but, when,, sometimes life catches up with you, you start a new career, or a new and important relationship,, and then taking a long trip is no longer feasible or desirable,, so do it NOW! I have NEVER regretted the long trip I took when I was young. I only wish I had stayed longer( and I was away for almost three months! )

London isn't cheap, but there are reasonable eats and sleeps if you look, and as noted, the museums are free( the Victoria and Albert, and right across the street the Science and Natural History Museums are great.

I agree with everyone else - go for it. You may never have this opportunity again.

Go, go, go! You'll not regret it. Once you get a job it can be hard to carve out time to do this kind of travel, so do it! Pam

You are all lovely, thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I just bought my return plane ticket from London to Phoenix for $297.02 from Student Universe. We'll be spending 13 days in the UK and 1 day in Amsterdam now.

DO it! - But...

Is you're flight to the Netherlands, then Netherlands home on the same booking? If so, won't they are going to check your bags through (if you have any)? You won't have access or the option to grab them. They'll be automatically transferred to the other plane. If it's two separate bookings (meaning separate purchases) you'll be fine.

If not... Call the airline, and pay the change fee to just change Amsterdam to your final destination. Considering that one leg to Amsterdam is probably waaaay cheaper than the part going back to the US, it should cover your change fee. (Of course, the airlines always like to gouge... LOL). You might even wind up with a credit or refund... never know. :)

But if you only have a carry on bag it will be with you at all times and you don't need to worry about something being checked through. I hope you have a great time!

AK, I think you can do it. I'm a student as well and just returned from Europe. London isn't as expensive as you think. I stayed at the Generator Hostel in London for around $30.00 USD a night. I had 3 other roomates who were awesome! In case you didn't know, most museums in London are free. I would suggest taking a free walking tour that is available at most hostels.

In London I would also suggest going to the London eye as well as the tower.. I was plesantly surprised at how little I spent in Europe... and that included shopping and going out to eat pretty much every night.

Well Done AK!

I'm glad you're coming to visit us here in the United Kingdom. It should be a very cultural trip what with Greece, Rome and Londinium. Were you a history major? :-)

It will be out of the main tourist season so things may be a bit cheaper and if you do like museums then as already mentioned most are free including the British Museum which holds stuff that we stole from all over the world (:-).

Have a great time!
Steve.
