Thello "Smart" fare

Hi all,

I am a bit panicked right now because I feel I have missed the opportunity to book cheap overnight train from Paris to Venice. We are in the middle of making bookings for our upcoming Europe trip in May. We had planned to take the thello train from Paris to Venice on 4th May and booked certain things around that. Now I just noticed that the smart fare (35 euros) for that day is not showing up. It is now selling at 98 euros. But I tried searching for a lot of dates between March and May and ALL of them are still showing 35 euros because it is still more than a month in advance, just this one date is showing 98 euros. We are kind of bummed because this means we will either have to pay triple the amount we were prepared for or change our plans so that we travel on a different date. Has anyone else faced this kind of situation before? Is there a chance that 35 euro fare might come up in a few days? We tried looking for ryan air flights from paris to rome too (even though that option is not as convenient), but even they are more expensive on that particular date.
We were looking at the overnight thello train because that seemed to be the most efficient way to travel from France to Italy.

Any suggestions would be welcome. Please help!

I'm not sure the train is the best way to travel from Paris to Italy. It's a long way and for those distances flying is more efficient and often cheaper.
If Venice is your desired destination in Italy, RyanAir flies from Paris Beauvais (BVA), about 80 km from Paris, to Treviso (TSF), near Venice. EasyJet and Vueling, another 2 low cost airlines, fly from Paris (CDG and/or ORY) to VCE. AirFrance and Alitalia (2 traditional airlines), fly that route as well.
Similar choices are available to other Italian destinations, including Rome (both FCO and CIA).
I suggest you do a search on Skyscanner.com for flight options with a variety of low cost airlines.

Thanks Roberto! The reason we were trying to avoid airlines was that the airports are far from the city while the train stations are in the center. We wanted to avoid spending time commuting to and from the airports using public transport. Plus it's an overnight train so we can sleep all the way. If there is a chance of that smart fare coming back, we would still definitely book it. But since it is quite expensive right now, we will look at other flight options. Thanks for suggesting skyscanner :)

I see RyanAir at 40 Euros per ticket on May 4th. RyanAir uses BVA airport in Paris, which is a bout 50 miles from the city but there's bus connections. Easy Jet is 98 Euros on May 4th but uses CDG airport in Paris. Vueling doesn't fly that route on the 4th.

If you're sold on traveling that route by train, I wouldn't wait as train fares seem to only go up. I faced a similar situation a few weeks ago on a route from Paris to Barcelona that I had been waiting months to purchase. The fares had been fabulously low. And then, finally, French rail put our travel day tickets on sale and they were like $100 higher per person. It seems that my travel day was in high season and the fares went up significantly. I posted my question here, got some helpful feedback and went back to purchase my tickets and in that few hours of time, all the 2nd class tickets on my train had sold out and I had to either take a different train or purchase a 1st class ticket.

I do think that's a better route to fly rather than do by train. I try to take the train whenever possible...I'm pretty fearful about flying. But even I fly the Paris-Venice route.

Valerie, you were SO right! Last night the fare for 2 people was around 160 euros, this morning it was 196 euros (when I posted) and now it is 230 euros! Whatever happened to the days it used to show 70 euros for 2 :( I am going to hurry up in all other bookings I have been sitting on. As for this route, I don't think we are ready to pay 230 euros per person, we might just take the Ryan air flight or travel one day earlier or later. Need to do this asap! Thanks to both of you for the help.

Please note( and this is important) Beavais is 90 km from Paris and and there is no direct train ( like there is to CDG) so if given a choice do not book a flight that leaves before 8:30- 9 am or you may have to take a very expensive taxi ride to airport.

Thanks, pat. We noticed that too :( We ended up changing our plans a little bit and booked the train for the next day since smart fares were still available for that day.
