I again searched this and a lot of posts are old. After researching pros and cons we decided we’re going to do this train to go from Paris to Milan. We’re going to spend the extra for a 2 person sleeper (not broke college students on a budget). We realize it won’t be luxurious but just a way to get from point A to point B without taking up valuable daytime. Since the train departs at 7:10 PM is there a lounge car or something to hang out in and watch the scenery before retiring to the sleeper car for the night?
Lots of info on Thello here: https://www.seat61.com/thello-train-from-paris-to-italy.htm
There are no ordinary seats. . . . . and there's a restaurant car for meals, drinks & snacks.
I don't think that would count as a lounge car. No seats if you are not consuming.
Sleeper compartments convert from seats to beds. I am not sure when they do the conversion, but that is where you can sit. See the photos in the abovementioned article.
It arrives at Milan at 06:00, and you have to get out then as the train continues from there to Venice. You probably want an early night.
And did you read these reviews? As "fun" as it sounds it seems lots of travelers have decided to never ride Thello again:
So.. is hotel open to store your luggage for the day .. some small hotels will have the front doors locked at 6 am ..
I wish you well.. but think you will regret it. You do gain a day .. but you will have lost a night of sleep.
Thank you for all the advice on this topic. We decided to change our itinerary and book a high speed train from Paris to Strasbourg, France for 1 day and then travel to Freiburg, Germany for a day. We figured it was about the same price as the questionable Thello train from Paris to Milan. Plus I know we’ll get good sleep and get to see 2 different smaller towns. We’re still going to visit Milan later in our trip. It’s a year away, but I know it will fly by!!
good choice
