We just returned from a 3 week trip to England and Scotland. We stayed 2 days in the Lake District at a **** B&B and had four items of clothing taken from our room which was around $300 worth of clothes. We travel to Europe twice each year and have never had such an experience and certainly not at an upscale B&B. Never occurred to us to do a clothing inventory before leaving. Of course this discovery of missing items came about when we were 200 miles away in Scotland. This is quite a disgusting experience- a lesson learned is to inventory clothes before leaving but even so the proof would not be there. From that point on most things remained locked in my luggage. We count the following as blessings: did not have to be airlifted home due to injury or serious illness; did not wreck the rental car; did not lose or have passports stolen; no jewelry taken-ironically it was locked in carry on while we hiked in the LD; did not get bedbugs; came home healthy. Still plenty angry though and somewhat shocked.
I emailed the B&B owners with the suggestion I may have left behind a jacket-gave a full description and offered to pay shipping if it was found. Reply was perhaps I left it in a restaurant which I did not. By this time my husband was missing a pair of slacks and a nice sweater and I took a picture of him wearing these items at a pub the night before we left. So I sent another email suggesting to the owner that she would be wise to be mindful of the behavior of her cleaning staff. We think a maid came in and took the items while we had breakfast. Trip Advisor will get a full report. We really vary our accomodations from modest little hotels, farm stays, splurge stays, nice B&B's, etc. Never had a problem with any-even ** hotels. Another thing I am thankful for is we did not lose the camera or any chip. On the trip last spring a traveller we met along the way had her ipod snatched from her hands as she viewed her pics-this was on a train in Portugal as she was returning from a day in Sintra.
Hi Susan. I'm sorry to hear about this. Did you talk to the B&B staff and ask them how this could have happened? If you think there was negligence on the part of the B&B, you could post a review of them on TripAdvisor or other review site and warn other people who might think of staying there.
