OMG!!! I am doing the happy dance right now and wanted to thank you all for the good advice. Since its officially official I'm sure there will be more questions. Like.... what kind of wine should we drink tonight to celebrate? :)! The dates are 20Dec-19Jan! If you've been to Europe during the holiday season what are your own personal favorite things to do/see? Christmas will be spent in Ireland.
WOW !!! Am I impressed. Long term planning. We did the Christmas Markets in Germany and Czech Republic over Christmas. There is a Christmas in Europe section that has a lot of good postings. We did not decide to go until early Oct. Good luck.
Either: 1) the best wine you have, or
2) the wine that's open ;-) My family says that 'one day' we'll see the Christmas markets...we aren't getting any younger... Congratulations!!!
How exciting... I spent a New Years in England a few years ago and it was great. Spent New Years Day at Warwick Castle and driving around the Cotswolds...magic! I have watched the RS DVD on the Christmas Markets...give it a look. I think its available on Hulu.
But you will need a little planning for Christmas day. I have had a number of Christmas periods in London which shuts down on Christmas day- eating choices are limited. So i would suggest working with your hotel/B&B ahead of time to plan your meals on christmas day- also your activties. church if you are so inclined or a car trip into the country. In England there are usually more activities on Boxing Day (much as I love curry- not my choice for a traditional chistmas day dinner)
Prepare for the worst (and then it won't happen). Here's what I learned a couple of months ago. Be aware the last two Decembers in Europe have been unseasonably cold and snowy. Thousands (and thousands) of travellers were stranded in airports (US and Europe) this past Xmas season. Luggage delays ---sometimes several weeks to catch up. Schedule some flexibility in your travel plans in case connecting flights get cancelled. We travelled one day early so we could have an extra day in Nuremburg for sightseeing before we boarded our Danube cruise. Our connection was cancelled but because we had that extra day we did JUST make the cruise. The sold out cruise was at 30% when we left port. It was the 5th day, before the last passengers caught up. Take as much as you can in your carry on. If your connection is cancelled and you end up on a different flight, that will be the only luggage you have. Try spending 10 days in the same outfit. NOT fun. Ask Sharon in Houston.
