The Rest Is History podcast - Do you listen?

I do, for a couple of years now. It's a great way to incrementally build your understanding of European history. At first I didn't easily follow everything. But bit by bit The Rest is History podcast has helped me build broader knowledge of European history, more context, more hooks to hang new information on.

All of which has been both an entertaining, rewarding use of time and a true enrichment of travel in Europe. The more you know about history, the better Europe gets :)

You? Anyone else tuning in to British historians Tom Holland & Dominic Sandbrook?

I do. I haven't listened in a few weeks because normally I listen when I walk in the morning. It's turned hot so I haven't been walking, and am behind on the episodes. But I love the history and their humor and banter. One of my favorite series of episodes is "America in '68."

America in '68 is a great mini-series. As is Britain in 1974!

Thank you for this recommendation! We are heading to France (4th trip) this summer with our teenager who is now more interested in European history than she has been prior to past trips. It looks like there is an entire season about the French Revolution that she and I may enjoy.

Sure Amy! The French Revolution series is quite interesting. Joan of Arc is also a captivating short series, not too long and quite accessible. It's pretty bonkers what a nobody teenage girl managed to achieve, particularly in her time. My daughter liked the Joan of Arc series.

I would love to see a Rick Steve x Rest is History collab of some sort. Not sure how to make it mesh, but I suspect they would have a fabulous, entertaining time talking together.

We are heading to Rouen for an overnight “day trip” and my daughter is specifically looking forward to the Joan of Arc sites. She’ll be all set and ready for her AP European History class next year - haha!

I listen to the German podcast version 'Der Rest ist Geschichte' from Deutschlandfunk (public broadcast). Not everything is always interesting, but I have learned a lot.

I do listen and have for quite awhile. I loved the French Revolution series, I learned a lot. I came to their podcast from Tom Holland’s brother. James Holland, also a much published historian has a podcast on WWll called ‘We Have Ways of Making You Talk’. As you can tell from the title it has a lot of humor as well as great history. For WWll buffs I highly recommend it. Also another great history podcast is Dan Carlin’s ‘Hardcore History’, very long form and in depth.
